Ds9 T1 Diabetes- sick day help

My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in March, so still new to this. He’s been poorly this past week, vomiting on Wednesday and Thursday, diarrhea yesterday and today. He’s point blank refusing to eat a thing, and is having hypos every 3-4 hours, which is being brought back up with Pepsi as it’s all he will have. Because he’s not eating he’s not having bolus insulin, but diabetic nurse said continue with basal which we have done. I think what im
asking is would he be better off in hospital right now? I can only get sips of water in him and absolutely no food, he’s extremely tired, sais his eyes keep going blurry and feeling strange and I just feel like he’s suffering here!
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated..

I have no experience with diabetes but I personally would want some medical input with these symptoms especially as it is so new to you & him. Hope he recovers soon x

Have your tried ice lollys? Sneaking small spoonfuls into him while hes watching tv and distracted? I have no diabetes experience, but these tricks have worked for me and unwell DC.
Head to hospital if your gut tells you to though. Dont wait for anyone's approval.

I’ve been wanting to take him up since he started vomiting on Wednesday, but he’s a very stubborn child (and that’s even without his blood sugars being high haha!), and he gets really angry and emotional when I suggest hospital. Not sure why really he loved it when we were last there (at diagnosis), just trying to weigh out if it’s worth all the anger and upset if there’s anything they can actually do to help x

You need advice on this as it can go wrong very quickly, my brother has been type 1 since the age of 14 (now 60's) but vomiting and diarrhea can lead to ketosis amongst other things. Better to get him checked out x

Yes I’ve been on the phone daily with the diabetes nurse, we’ve been checking ketones every 2 hours the highest he’s gone to is 0.7 but she advised they were starvation ketones as his bloods are staying around 4-5. It really is a better safe than sorry situation isn’t it, just wanted to weigh up pros and cons beforehand as it’s now the weekend and I have 5 other (young) children to sort, and the battle of getting him there.. the joys! X

How old is he? He does need to understand that the hospital are there to help him and its far more preferable to ending up unconscious and having to be blue lighted in as an emergency

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/04/2026 16:36

@Lightuptheroom literally says he’s 9 in the title

OP I would take him to A&E. Better safe than sorry.

Pippatpip · 25/04/2026 16:48

Mother of type 1 here. I would take him to hosp if he isn’t retaining anything.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 25/04/2026 16:49

Go and get him some anti sickness meds. 0.7 ketones isn’t anything to worry about id be concerned hes not keeping anything down.

Dublassie · 25/04/2026 17:30

My brother has T1 . I’d also go to the ED . The can get unwell so quickly!

MississippiCroc · 25/04/2026 20:49

Have you not got an emergency out of hours line you can ring? When our diabetic nurses aren’t around we can contact the hospital’s medical team directly.

You should have a sick rules plan depending on if you’ve got a pump or injections about when you escalate and checking ketones

It’s such a worry.

All our IDDM children have open access to the ward. An oral dose of ondansetron anti sickness can work wonders.

MamaVoltage · 26/04/2026 01:59

Hi all thank you, just wanted to update I rang the ward and they said to bring him up he’s had some anti sickness and is having IV fluids. Feeling much more relieved now x
