Has adenoid removal alone helped toddler speech delay and ear issues?

Has adenoid removal alone helped your toddler’s speech/ear issues?

Please can someone help or share advice? I’m really struggling 😞

I’ve never felt this stressed before. I’ve lost weight, I can’t sleep, and I’m constantly researching what to do.

My son is 22 months old (2 in May) and has no clear words. He has said “apple,” “orange,” “nose,” “please,” “mama,” and “dad,” but doesn’t repeat them.

We were referred to speech therapy in December but have only had one appointment so far. I’ve been told to focus on simple words like “up” until our next session in April.

He’s had ongoing ear issues since he was a baby, with repeated infections. Audiology discharged him saying he meets the minimum hearing requirements.

I then saw a private ENT who mentioned possible glue ear, but tests showed eustachian tube dysfunction instead, and we were given steroid nasal drops.

I got a second ENT opinion who said he has large adenoids and has agreed to remove them (this is now going ahead), but he doesn’t want to put in grommets as my son’s hearing tests are within the expected range for his age.

Since then, his eardrums burst after a cold, but the consultant still doesn’t think grommets are needed.

Our GP has also referred us to NHS ENT, but the appointment isn’t until July. I’ve already been told they won’t do anything unless audiology shows hearing loss above a certain threshold — so I feel stuck.

He often has his hands on his ears, especially after baths/showers, which worries me.

I feel like I’m failing him and don’t know how to help him or ease any pain he might be in.

Has anyone been through something similar?
Did adenoid removal alone help with speech or ear issues?
Should I be pushing harder for grommets, or trust what the consultants are saying?

I would really appreciate any advice or experiences right now 💛

Hi. This may or may not be helpful. My son was around 2 when I had his hearing checked as his vocab was only a couple of words. So wanted to reassure you about the limited words. He also struggles with the pronunciation of words.
His only issue was that he had glue ear. We went to a private children’s ent professor who was absolutely brilliant so did thorough exams and inserted the grommets. I can share his details if you were willing to get a second opinion. I totally understand the worry especially when it concerns your children. Hope you’re ok x
