Do Myopia management lens work?

5 replies

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/04/2026 14:51

My child was diagnosed at 12, went back for a check up and his vision has got worse and they now want to prescribe Myopia management lens. Two questions if possible;

  1. are they effective and is one brand any better than another?

  2. Specsavers is quoting £225. Are there any online companies that might be cheaper but also offer the NHS frame voucher?

thank you 💐

  1. I’ll let you know in a couple of years! DD has been wearing them for 2 months.
  2. I don’t know, but don’t they have to be more precisely fitted, in person, than other specs? I’m paying £240 for DD’s from an independent optician, so £225 sounds ok!!

DD has been wearing them for 3 years and her eyes have only slightly changed so I would say they are working. I pay £49 per month which includes eye tests every 6 months (out Opticians’s don’t work with the NHS), new frames every 6 months up to the value of £180 and new lenses when needed (mostly when she’s changed frames). DD is in adult frames so not sure if this makes a difference to costs.

They seemed to slow down my DDs myopia progression. They have always been expensive - we are at Boots

My DS's eyes got slightly worse every year, until he started using myopia management lenses 3 years ago. They've been stable since then. They take a bit of getting used to, as you have to look through the centre of the lens. I would recommend them.

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast It's illegal to sell glasses to children online, thankfully.
Stellest and Miyosmart are the best brands. Specsavers also have their own which hasn't been shown yet to be as effective in trials - but is better than not using myopia management lenses in progression.
You can also get contact lenses for some prescriptions too.
