Two-year-old with five days of fever, told viral tonsillitis, antibiotics?

Hi all
a little anxious and exhausted which is driving me up the wall
my 2 year old son has 5 days of temperature now, I have to full cover nurofen and calpol throughout day otherwise it spikes up. When the temp is controlled he’s ok in himself but still not eating
they think it’s viral tonsillitis but my gut tells me we need antibiotics!
they also wont do a blood test,
hasn’t improved so I really think we need abx but they’re not giving it. Any similar cases?

Yes. I myself went through a 6-day fever illness back in January, came to see GP and they said viral. No ABs. Then my 2 year old got sick and she also had fever for 6 days on the dot. Day seven was mild temperature and she bounced back straight away. I took her to GP as well and they didn’t give us anything but were happy to see her again any time. Maybe get him checked out again tomorrow if worried, they won’t refuse seeing a child. Xx

Oh and my daughter wouldn’t eat for 6 days while she had the fever. Only milk, water, a bit of porridge. She normally has a massive appetite and has very much caught up as soon as she got better.

Why does your gut tell you it needs antibiotics?

Starryeyed2021 · 19/03/2026 20:04

@SiberFox oh thankyou for your prompt commen :)
was your little one having full fever ? I mean like every day? It’s exhausting as I need to literally be alternating the nurofen Calpol otherwise he spikes and becomes absolutely miserable and boiling hot! It’s a war getting these meds in him already so I am dreading abx but equally I want a solution and not just waiting around for this “ viral “ to clear up. When we could be using this Timw for abx

@Didimum thankyou
i think it’s because I haven’t seen any improvement or heading in positive trajectory at all, which makes me think we need an intervention infact it’s becoming harder to control the temps
the doctor said they do see white pus on tonsils,
at least worth a try for the abx? Worse case it isn’t but at least tried

It was full blown temperature, helped by Calpol and Nurofen but otherwise spiking.

if they see white pus on the tonsils, doesn’t that indicate a bacterial infection though?

Starryeyed2021 · 19/03/2026 20:16

@SiberFox tjays what I think too
im going back to GP in morning I dread more days of this

Viral tonsillitis can cause white spots, and viral tonsillitis is far more common than bacterial.

When did he last see the GP? I’d probably want the to see him again before the weekend, just because once you get to the weekend it will be harder.

Starryeyed2021 · 19/03/2026 20:59

We are going back tomorrow as we’ve hit the 5 day temp mark and still continuing. I will at least ask for backup antibiotics as I’m worried over weekend, he hasn’t eaten in ages!

You can buy a rapid swab test for strep a from Tesco. If you take it with you they can swab tonsils to see if it’s bacterial. It sounds like strep with the temp getting high with nurofen and calpol together

Update: he was vomiting blood last night; temp continued into 5 days I took him paed ward and they started IV antibiotics

Poor little boy! Makes me angry how they are so reluctant to give antibiotics for tonsillitis/strep- it can be really nasty.I've really had to push for them before and had to once get a test from tesco pharmacy to prove it was that to make them listen.
I hope your little one improves soon.
