Changing Nappy

Hi, first time mum here!

I have a baby boy and oh my gosh is it hard to change the nappy - either getting pee'd on/him wriggling around/he puts his hand down there when he has pooped - it's a nightmare - I dread changing his nappy. I am also worried for the grandparents as they are meant to look after him some days in the week when I am at work and I wonder how they will manage.

Anyone else had this problem and what did you do to help?

How old is he?

RuthW · 11/03/2026 12:02

I’m sure the grandparents will
be fine. They will have been through it before

Oh yeah mine's a nightmare for nappies since she could move. Are you using nappy pants as we find those much easier, can change standing up.

Before taking his old nappy off, wipe under his belly button with a wet wipe. That’ll cause him to wee whilst you get a clean nappy ready etc. Then you’re safe to take off the old nappy without getting weed on.

Use poppers vests, when you undo them, then pull it up with his arms inside and popper over his shoulder. It acts like a baby straight jacket and stops him grabbing at things.

I need a diagram for this popper trick - I don’t understand but I’m intrigued as my own escape artist is a nightmare to change!

I bought a Wriggler changing mat when mine was difficult.

Put the changing mat perpendicular to you, as you sit on the floor. Once he’s lying down, put one leg (very gently!) across his tummy - with no pressure at all, just as a barrier. Then Change super quick.

give him keys to hold while you do it.

I can’t help with the weeing thing as a mother of girls!

I was going to suggest this too, pin him with your leg, it keeps his hands out of this nappy too.
