My dc got up in the middle of the night and one of their eyelids is drooped.
at first I thought it was an allergic reaction but wouldn’t this happen in both eyes? It’s in one eye and almost shut, it was watering overnight but not watering now. We’re abroad and im trying to work out what medical facilities are here as it’s early hours still so am trying not to panic. Dc usually has lots of allergies hence my thinking it’s an allergy.

I think it’s drooping because it’s swollen op.

notabingthing · 05/03/2026 09:32

Could he have scratched his eye ?!

Seeline · 05/03/2026 09:36

It looks swollen so could be an allergy - try some antihistamines
It could be the result of an injury - scratch, grit in it or similar Is the eye sore or red as that could indicate an injury.
It could be an infection at the root of an eye lash - bathe in boiled water - leave to cool a little first!
It could be blepharitis - an infection in the eyelid. My DD had that once and it need antibiotic cream from the GP. I was told to go straight to A&E if the swelling got worse, so it was serious. Maybe try and get to a doctor or an A&E if possible?

It’s swollen. Could be a stye could be more serious. Hot compresses regularly to see if that helps. If it gets worse you may need a&e - my youngest went when she was 2, they were worried about pre orbital cellulitis which can be very serious if it deteriorates.

It’s swollen not droopy, probably the start of something like conjunctivitis. Seasonal allergies can also present like this for some.
Over the counter antihistamines and keep an eye on it.

1000puzzle · 05/03/2026 10:06

Thank you, taken antihistamines and will watch it over the day then.

I had that a month ago… took weeks to sort out. Felt like a bruise and very painful. The GP prescribed antibiotics and antibiotic cream for the eye too. Think it was an eye infection. Blepharitis.

Whattodo1610 · 05/03/2026 10:41

It’s not drooping, it’s just swollen. Couple be an allergic reaction (which can happen in only 1 eye), many infections or irritations as pp’s have said. Good you’ve started antihistamines, give them over the next few days at least too. Bathe the eyes regularly with cotton wool and clean sterile water, obviously with a new piece of cotton wool with every wipe. A hot flannel held over the affected eye will help draw out irritants etc.

@1000puzzle please do not listen to medical advice from overconfident non-experts on Mumsnet.

I would suggest that you type in "acute ptosis" into the Google and click on a link that's attached to a reputable source, like the NHS or a specific children's hospital.

As with many other things, this could well be nothing, is perhaps even most likely to be nothing, but not necessarily. With kids, it's always better to be sure.

Depending on where you are, you may be able to head to a pharmacy for some quick advice. In many places a pharmacist could certainly be the first port of call for something like that.

whatsit84 · 05/03/2026 12:02

It’s swollen rather than droopy I think? Eye infection - can you see a pharmacist or doctor?

endofthelinefinally · 05/03/2026 12:04

IME high sreet opticians are really helpful with eye problems an can refer you to gp or hospital if necessary. They can also provide treatment.
