Recovery after adenotonsillectomy-wtaf?!

Its been 6 days since DS (4) adenotonsillectomy and i feel like ive been transported back to when he was a baby and didnt sleep!
This first 3 nights were good, he slept well and seemed ok but day 4 came and hes really feeling it!
Hes miserable and not sleeping, hes inconsolable at night throwing himself about, even in bed with us he just doesnt know what to do with himself.
Ive kept to a strict medication routine but nothing seems to help not even the morphine prescribed!
Anyone else experienced this? Losing the will, mainly because i dont know how to help him!

Ahh I feel for you - day 5-7 were the worst!! After this I found my daughter got better rapidly - sending strength! Keep eating “normal” food and keep up with painkillers

you’re nearly in the light!

flightless55 · 03/03/2026 21:50

Obviously if you think the pain is out of control then seek medical help - don’t listen to me on the internet ha! But I vividly remember it being rough (worse maybe because I thought the first few days would be the worse!)

If you can, get a humidifier. I wish we'd had one from the start - we only realised how great they were when he'd nearly recovered anyway.

My DS just had a tonsillectomy almost 3 weeks ago (although he is a lot older than your DS) and he really improved overnight on day 7 - the info they gave was that days 4-8 would be the worst so hopefully you will be coming out of the worst of it.

My son had this at the same age, as long as we kept up with the meds he was totally fine. He might have an infection at the wound site if he is in so much discomfort, maybe worth a GP visit? I had mine out at 21 and much like your son was in agony despite pain meds and it turned out I had an infection and antibiotics really helped.

Yes my kid had the same. Absolutely awful. Hot majorly worse day 5 ISH I think, which I'd been warned about, but not was it hard.
Did improve not long afterwards.

I had only my tonsils put as an adult and remember the first few days being fine. Then not! I wondered why I'd made such a awful decision, thena couple of days later started to improve and by the end of the two weeks I felt completely fine. I remember reading similar things on the Internet about the recovery.

What helped me was really propping myself up to eat. I was practically sat up on my side with a towel underneath to catch all the horrible drool that was coming out.

It always gets worse before it gets better. It’s common to have a dip then for things to improve. Keep up the medication. Children’s nurse here.

Yes took him to gp on day 7 because he hadnt slept for days and wasnt eating, refusing meds and water. She said he should be at the pinnacle point of pain now. Healing well no infection.
Were on day 9 now and sleep is no better, wakes up sobbing and moaning and he used to be a good sleeper, questioning my life choices right now!
When he eats he clutches his face, at firdt i thought is it his teeth, but being in the dental proffesion, im really strict on teeth brushing and rinsing mouth after anything sweet (my kids hate me im sure).
Just living on a prayer that things will improve soon!

I slept with mine and set an alarm to give calpol at regular intervals really through the night. I could tell when my dc was about to wake as there was shuffling and the start of some sobbing :( you’ve absolutely got to stay on top of the pain meds and not take no for an answer

Tiptopflipflop · 06/03/2026 20:58

He might well have an infection at the adenoid site. The GP can't see that, only the tonsils. My son had this. I'd go back to the GP.

justrelaxandsleep · 06/03/2026 21:00

Day 4,5 was the worst for my daughter. As others said keep up the pain relief and don’t be afraid to use the morphine.

StolenTeapots · 06/03/2026 21:02

Def go back
That sounds awful

He doesnt have a temp, but hes just a completely different kid. Hes whingy and irritable, somewhat badly behaved i.e lashing out at his sister which is unlike him. I put it down to him not sleeping well, he wakes up sobbing and incosolable for about 5 mins, doesnt want to be touched, just rolling around in bed. It takes me at least 10 mins to calm him down, then falls baack to sleep. He doesnt say alot he just moans.
He didnt come round form anaesthetic well, i had to go into recovery to see him screaming and trying to climb out the bed and surgeons restraining him, i had to get on the bed and bear hug him till he fell asleep, whilst being rolled down to the ward!
I just want my happy little boy back!

We had exactly the same. No temperature. Massive switch in his behaviour. Three weeks later it wasn't getting better. Thankfully the GP gave us two weeks of coamoxiclav and by day 4 he started to improve. He was back to normal by the end of the course.

When we had the followup with our ENT she explained that post-surgical adenoid infections are not unusual because the back of the nose harbours so much bacteria. She had actually gave us a week of antibiotics post surgery as a preventative, but even that wasn't enough.
