Toddler colds and coughs

My boy who has just turned 2 has just started nursery in January. He caught a cold (runny nose and a bit of a cough) a couple weeks after he started and has had it for nearly 6 weeks now. 1 week during this he had severe diarrhea which I think he must’ve picked up from nursery.
he’s been to the doctors twice now as his cough is no better and is keeping him up at night. Asthma runs in the family so the doctor did prescribe him a blue inhaler and said this should help with the cough but he has been taking it now for nearly a week and it doesn’t seem much better.
his nose is still running like a tap everyday and the cough is still consistent.
has anybody got any advice as I feel like the doctors don’t care much?
they said his chest was clear but were unable to look in the back of his mouth.

Going through the same thing with my DS right now, nearly 2 months with the cough and runny nose. Nothing seems to be working! The doctor has said its not in his chest as well it's an upper respiratory infection and to just wait it out. Do you use nasal saline spray? We have found it helps with comfort, gone from coughing throughout the night to one coughing fit then back to sleep when comforted. We've also been putting baby Vick on his feet and then socks.

It's awful when the doctors don't really give much advice. Apologies I haven't got much advice either but wanted you to know you're not alone as we're in the same boat and cannot understand why this viral infection won't shift! I've made my own mumsnet post asking for advice as well so if I get anything I'll post back on here.

Go back to the doctor.

Hi! Just wanted to update on some information I got on my related post that nay be helpful to you.

You could tell the doctor you'd like a blood test done to rule out any bacterial infection or immune issues. - side note, we did this and it was helpful. Came back normal but was a relief as it's confirmation.

Someone else also suggested Elderberry syrup for immune system.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for this I’m going to take him back this week so I will keep that in mind when I see what the doctor says.
we have been using a calpol plug in and also Vicks

If he does have asthma calpol plug in and vickes might be aggravating the cough. Found this out recently with my nearly 4 year old. If asthma is present - wondering if some piriton might help if it’s an allergy related thing? Deffo go back to the doctors and put your foot down. I know they say they get rid of something and pick up something else but honestly 6 weeks is too long for a cough. Poor lad, So frustrating x

We’ve had the same. She’s essentially had a cough for nearly enough a year. It kind of flares once a month and keeps her up all night, and outside of that she’ll cough at least a few times a day.

we’ve tried:
inhaler (doesn’t do much)
antihistamine
cough syrup
honey
a few rounds of antibiotics
reflux meds

the reflux meds and antibiotics seem to make the most difference but it’s so hard, she just seems really suspectible to coughs.
