My son will be going under general anesthetic tomorrow and my mind is racing.

His 3 years old and fell over today causing him to bite down on his tongue so hard his gone all the way through.

Straight up to a & e max facial doctor came down needs surgery that will not come back together.

His back in tomorrow morning nil by mouth from now.
I've been told to expect 45 mins so it can have a good clean and then stitched back together, he will then have a local in his tongue to reduce pain afterwards.

I'm so nervous for him, he is more fussed my his grazed knee as he can see it

Oh bless you. He won’t know anything about going off to sleep but him waking up in recovery is hard, for you! You won’t be allowed back with him straight away and you might hear him crying. Rest assured this is a good sign and he won’t remember any of it. Boys tend to come around fighting. They’ll get you in asap to help calm him down. Good luck!

My daughter had a GA recently for an MRI scan (so different to your situation) but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting. The waiting without breakfast was one of the worst bits. I held her on my lap while she went to sleep with the gas mask which was disconcerting as they can thrash around a bit. When she woke up I was able to give her a cuddle and then she was wheeled back to the ward in the bed. She had a canula in her wrist which she hated (understandably) so we just tried to distract her until it could be removed. She was mostly groggy afterwards but onviously in our case the procedure wouldn’t have caused her pain. One little girl was quite distressed bless her. She doesn’t seem to have any memory of it.

Sending you positive thoughts and hope it goes smoothly for you.

My son had a GA when he was 5 and they sat him on my knee and sort of stood in front of his arm and he conked out immediately and I laid him on the bed.

I was allowed into recovery and came up back to his room with him. He was v whiny and confused and groggy but that was it. He has almost no memory of it all now.

This was for some quite tricky and uncomfortable ENT stuff. I was dreading it. He was fine.

My little one had a ga recently for a 4 hour major op. He was amazing! He went to sleep so peacefully, I was ushered out of the room quickly- that was really hard for me! We were taken to recovery afterwards where he was already awake , he doesn't remember that at all. Again he was very calm and happy, and asking for food! All in all far more upsetting for me than it was for him. Good luck op.

DS had many operations as a young child. I always fell apart so DH was in charge of taking him down to the theatre. He was always absolutely fine - woozy when he came round - but has few memories of these ops as an adult.

Hope it all goes well!

My 3 dc have had lots of GAs. You won't know how he reacts till hes coming round. Dc1 just sleeps it off, dc2 wakes up full of life and dc3 has to be put in a padded room as thrashes around. All normal reactions.
Make sure you get a drink and something to eat while dc in theatre. It will seem along time but it isn't.
With dc1 I often got called to say was out of theatre but couldn't see them as was too sleepy. Dc3 they would call me as soon as finished so I could hold them down while the staff are busy.

My niece had a GA a few years ago at age 3 for a serious facial injury. She has no memory of any of it, the injury or the aftermath.

I hope it all goes well today.

Mine is always exceedingly grumpy on coming around. But that only lasts for a few hours then back to cheery self.

Hi all, thank you for all your replies.

He went off to sleep ok no thrashing, although I did not cope all that well, held it together whilst with him, walked outside the room and had a cry.

He came out well I got called I could hear him crying as I got near by, but by time I walked in he was just staring into space. His been sleepy on and off since he went down at 09:15 and we were back on ward for 11.

Just need him to try and est something soft but with stitches in tongue that is clearly swollen I don't think I would have much of an appetite either.

Many thanks again for all replies really did help me. X
