Should I be worried about platelet levels?

Hi Everyone,

My 3 year old son had a blood test on Monday following a prolonged complaint of tummy ache with no obvious signs as to
why.

Bloods came back has B12 over 1000, platelets 627, lymphocytes 2.9 and some other outliers. GP asked for advice from Paeds who have asked for bloods to be repeated in 4 weeks time and to go back should symptoms changed.

The GP advised that his levels are likely to a recent virus which he had but obviously his levels do need following up. I know you should never Google but potential causes for his levels are quite scary?!

Has anyone else been though something similar and all was well? Xx

His b12 is high too - but they won't mess around as he has multiple areas that are out of range, hopefully you will get a good detailed investigation from the specialist . Try not to google!

I Was concerned about the B12 too, he doesn’t take a multivitamin that contains B12 so it’s not from supplements 🙁

it’s so hard not to worry when I just assumed bloods would come back completely normal 😞 4 weeks seems like such a long time x

Has he been constipated? Or had a cold in the last month? Both could throw out his platelets if the constipation is caused by an iron deficiency which is really common in young kids, especially if they drink loads of milk and don't take a supplement. What was his ferritin level?

@Swaytheboat no constipation but has has a recent bug that went round nursery. The GP did say that this is most likely the cause of his raised levels. I don’t have his ferritin level, but the GP did say all apart from what has been sent to me were in normal range.

His outliers were:
B12 - 1028
lymphocyte - 2.8
Haemoglobin estimation - 129
MCV - 87.7
Platelet - 627

I am aware that I am 99% reading too much into things and its most like a reactionary response after the bug, I just worry 😭

It's always a stress when they are ill and then numbers are out of range. But I don't think you need to worry. Obviously it's hard not to, but objectively at the moment I think repeating the bloods in a few weeks and going from there is sensible.

He’s randomly spiked a temperature this afternoon, 39.5. Has come down to 38 with calpol but no other signs of being unwell. Probably and hopefully just another bug from nursery, he has been complaining about tummy ache a lot more today than normal but it is an everyday thing normally. 😞

Let the gp know they might want to escalate referral, don't assume it's just a bug
