Calpol help

My daughter has a fever and I want to give her more calpol but the no more than 4 doses in 24 hours is confusing me.

I first gave her calpol at 1pm yesterday, so would it be 4 doses in 24 hours resetting at 1pm every day, or is it in the last 24 hours.

These are the times I’ve given her calpol the past two days, would she be allowed more now - it’s 23:30/11:30pm almost

It's the last 24hrs. She can have neurofen now but no more calpol

Appleberrybloom · 11/02/2026 23:31

Does she still have a temperature that won't come down?

Slinkyminky22 · 11/02/2026 23:33

You cant give her any more calpol until after 2.15am tonight.

CrackInTheGlass · 11/02/2026 23:38

It’s the last 24 hours. You can switch to Nurofen but no more Calpol until the time frame has elapsed. How old is she? And is her temp staying the same regardless? If she’s little get a doctors appt asap.

Thank you everyone, sorry I haven’t used the website before so idk if you’ll be notified of my reply but she is almost 17 months now.

Her temperature does go down when she has the calpol a little and she seems happier for a bit but when it wears off she feels hot again. She’s been around 38° at her worst, since last night, we have her calpol earlier in the day as she was exposed to illness and seemed more grumpy than usual.

She’s not sleeping very well from being poorly so I have been watching Little Bear with her and she did just fall asleep without calpol. She’s will most likely wake me up early hours wanting a cuddle again so I will give the calpol then.
I did take also change her into some cooler clothes and luckily her temperature has gone down a little to 37.8

Yes, only 4 doses per 24 hour period. Best way to achieve this is to space 6 hours apart, I appreciate the packet says 4-6 hours but if someone does 4 hours apart consistently you would have had all of your doses after only 12 hours (0,4,8,12) and then couldn’t give any more for 12 hours.

Hope your little one is okay, but 111 is there if you have any concerns about how they are overnight.

38 is a very mild fever and a sign that her body is fighting something. You don't need to give medicine just for this as long as they're comfortable. If she's in pain or can't sleep due to discomfort, then that's different. Look at her rather than the thermometer.

As others have said, having infant ibuprofen to hand can be useful if she really needs regular pain relief as you can switch to it if necessary.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

This. You don’t have to treat a fever and 38 is not a high fever. Treat if she’s uncomfortable or unsettled, miserable.. But definitely follow look at the child advice not the number on the thermometer.

My child can have a temperature of 39, and be happy playing. My other is the complete opposite.

For most illnesses you treat the symptoms and not the temperature.

Loosely this is what I follow obviously it does vary a bit depending on how they present.
Under 38C only give Calpol/ibuprofen if struggling with symptoms.
38-39C give Calpol/ibuprofen if struggling with symptoms and at night/ before a nap just to try and give some better quality sleep if possible.
39-40C give Calpol/ibuprofen regular through out the day but wait for rebound of symptoms. This might mean 4h gaps or 7h gaps. No more than 4 doses in 24h alternating Calpol and ibuprofen if necessary
Over 40C give Calpol and ibuprofen according a schedule.

The 4h schedule works if you assume you won't need any overnight where as the 6h schedule is needed if you need to give relief overnight. I tend to give 3 doses of Calpol and 2 doses of ibuprofen during the day which means I then have the option of giving the 4th /3rd doses overnight if needed. For example Calpol at 8am, 1pm and 6pm (5h gaps) Ibuprofen at 10am and 4pm (6-7h gap fitting around. Calpol. Then if they struggle overnight they might get some more ibuprofen at 11pm and Calpol at 3 am. Starting the next 24h when they wake up
