What to give a breastfed baby who is dairy intolerant?

My baby can’t tolerate when I have dairy. (It’s not a full CMPA just gas and pain and discomfort etc)

We need to give him formula soon. What do you recommend so he’s not in pain?

(Currently in Tennessee - so maybe something you can buy from a Kroger?)

Thank you x

Why do you need to give formula, as the reason for this might change my answer?

You're probably better off asking on another forum that's more US focused - I think formulafeeders is the sub - because in the UK, parents are prescribed specialist formula by the NHS if their child has CMPA.

At six months you can also try the dairy ladder.

If he's symptomatic just on you eating dairy, then he's very sensitive to dairy. I would expect you not to be able to use a normal formula. He'll at least need a hydrolysed formula, or more likely an amino acid based one. In the UK those would be prescribed rather than bought (which is handy as they're much more expensive than normal formula, and obviously prescription is free) and they taste weird so it's hard to get older babies to start taking them.

This is a primarily UK site, so most of us can't help with what you can buy in the US.

If a baby needs dairy free formula in the UK, their Dr prescribes is and the baby gets it for free on the NHS.

You'll be better off asking an American forum.

How old is your LO @jules0?

I got this,...

10.0.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.1 Admin Login

10.0.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.1 is the default IP address to login admin panel of a router. It is often mistyped as 10.0.0.0.1 which will return an invalid webpage.

I went dairy/egg free and continued to breastfeed. Is that not an option?

FruAashild · 24/02/2026 14:50

I just kept breastfeeding until he grew out of his CMPA (we had regular allergy tests on the NHS). DS refused to have any dairy alternative except alpro yoghurt (he was fine with my BM, we only discovered his allergy when we started introducing solids at 6 months and he became covered in a rash as soon as he made physical contact with dairy).

How old is your LO? You say he's 'dairy intolerant' but 'not a full CMPA'. Do you mean he has a lactose intolerance (very unusual in an infant) or that he doesn't fulfil some criteria for an allergy? Because if he's reacting to milk in your diet that sounds quite bad and he will need a dairy free formula on prescription.
