Mild case of chickenpox, can it be caught again?

My lg has currently got chicken pox (we’re on day 4) but I’m inclined to believe it’s a very mild case, she’s not been poorly whatsoever and she must have 20 spots at the most, a couple extra have appeared each day, and they’re not even bothering her. It’s definitely chicken pox, it’s the classic spots and it’s going around her class at school.
What I’m worried about is that because it’s been such a mild case is I’ve been told it’s possible that she will catch it again at a later date, possibly adulthood and it be really serious that time.
Does anyone have any insight?

It is possible - both my DDs have had it twice (DD1 mild then more severe, DD2 severe then mild). Not directly related to your question but I have since learnt that having one child who has it twice means the other has an increased likelihood of also getting it a second time as they can be genetically disposed to reinfection.

Will also add though they have both had it twice and each a fairly nasty case they never had symptoms which required additional medical help.

My daughter (now 5) has had it twice in two years, one mild case and then one more severe. No lasting damage though

Ds had it mild the first time, then had it a second time which was worse. He also then had shingles as a teenager. No lasting damage though - although the shingles left some scarring

My little girl is just recovering from her second dose of chicken pox, she’s in reception at school. She had it mildly when at nursery but this time has been pretty horrid. Hoping my son doesn’t get it again, he’s in year 4 so hopefully won’t but will see!

SlashBeef · 07/02/2026 18:28

I had it mildly as a child and then caught it as an adult unfortunately. It was rough!

ItsTimeToChang3 · 07/02/2026 18:34

Yes. I had it as a 6 week old baby and it was everywhere, I’d just had brain surgery and caught it from the ward it was everywhere apparently, eyes, ears, mouth, genitals etc. then I caught it again when I was 8 and my mum was on a hen do and when she came into my grandparents house she immediately said ‘chicken pox’, it was mild that time but weirdly when I started my job, occ health did bloods and I still don’t have any immunity to it so I’ve had to have the vaccine 🤣

Ohfuckrucksack · 07/02/2026 18:42

It is possible. My oldest had it under 1 year old and then again when sibling caught it at 5.

RampantIvy · 07/02/2026 18:44

Yes. DD had it so mildly the first time she didn't build up enough immunity. She got it quite badly at 9 and still has the scars at 25.

Yes, it doesn't matter whether it's mild or severe, you can catch chicken pox (and measles) multiple times. The severity also does not necessarily decrease the number of times you catch it. However, in healthy children and adults, it's extremely rare for it to cause something life threatening like encephalitis (something like a chance in 1 in 10,000).

Very badly aged 8. Mildly aged 18.

German measles I've been jabbed twice neither inoculation took and I had it as a child as well.

ShowOfHands · 07/02/2026 19:03

DH has had it 4 times (that we know of), getting worse each time. Last time, he developed meningitis.

Conversely, DS had a mild case aged 4 and has never had it again.

ComeOnRef · 07/02/2026 21:24

Both mine had it twice! Mildly first time round.

DD was similar when she caught it aged 3yo.
She gave it to dd2 who had it really badly.

Dd is now in her 20s and been through best friend/brother/other friends having it and never had it again.

Having said that I went through friends/sister having chickenpox as a child and never caught it until I was at uni and no one else I knew had it!

nannyl · 08/02/2026 16:16

yes.

You can have it many times.

My Dad had it 7 times, 3 during my life time.

My sister has never had it (but I had it as her sibling when she was only a few days old)
I've been exposed to it so very many times, working closely with children but only had it once when I was 3.
