Just that really. This is my 8yo’s nail. It hurts, it’s catching on things, do I cover it or not? Any other suggestions?

Just bumping this thread for the OP

mazedasamarchhare · 06/02/2026 09:32

Ouch! I’d put a plaster over that to stop it from catching. Hopefully someone else will be along soon with more useful advice.

CraftyClaraChaos · 06/02/2026 10:13

Thanks, I’ve sent him to school with a plaster on it. Someone has suggested clear nail varnish, which I’m happy to try. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or products I can try.

Ouch!

I've never used it, but ive recently had adverts floating around for "nail glue" to deal with things like this - probably just a tougher nail varnish!
My nails are a mess since I started my new job, hence my Google searches probably generating the adverts!!!

Nail glue, and trim it as short as you possibly can to prevent it catching. That must have been bloody painful - and will continue to be if it keeps catching.

Amazon have some nail repair patches for children

Tabletable · 06/02/2026 21:51

I’ve used superglue on mine. Does the trick but needs to be reapplied.

I have a similar split on my nail and am using nail glue and silk wrap from Amazon which seems to be holding it together.

isitmytime · 06/02/2026 23:15

Trim the nail short and keep doing so until it grows out. You can get specific nail wrapa for this kind of thing and they work really well. If you can’t get them you can use a teabag and super glue to do the same thing. Just cut out a piece of the bag to fit the split and hold it in place with tweezers, then drop the glue over the cracked part.
even with the wrap on it I’d still keep it covered with a plaster

IncessantNameChanger · 06/02/2026 23:16

I have had a lot of success with a tiny piece of Teabag paper and super glue. It lasted almost two weeks, twice. So they take a few goes to grow out. It doesn't look amazing but it works well. I could wash my very long hair, although I did try to avoid staying too long in the shower. This can also catch at the edge so once it's dry, give it a good file at the nail edge.

Unicorn34 · 07/02/2026 00:26

Get a piece of gauze (inside a plaster or lint, and place it fully over the split, then paint over it with nail glue. Once hardened you can either file it a bit so it doesn't catch or do another layer of gauze and glue. Try to tuck it down the side a bit if you can.

I hope this works 🤞

Yes I second the teabag paper and superglue. As PP said it doesn't look beautiful but it works well.
