I’m looking for some advise. I have a 9 year old son very nearly 10 bedtimes are a headache.
He goes for a wee after his bath then we have a cuddle and read a story. He then needs another wee before he goes to sleep. Recently he now can’t sleep and spends a good hour sometimes nearly two hours tossing and turning and having to get up for a poo and a wee.
I have taken him to the drs he’s had a scan on his bladder everything has come back fine.
I’ve tried being calm and fine about the million toilet trips , I’ve also tried being firm and saying this needs to stop etc. Nothing works this has been going on for months now.
Has anyone been through anything similar is there any hope for us to sleep through the night again like he used to ?

Did they test his blood? Is he very thirsty?

Mygosh · 02/02/2026 23:07

Maybe there is something troubling him. Is he open about his emotions with you? Did the Dr suggest any blood tests for disease/illness that could cause frequent urination and restlessness?

What time does he have his last drink? Is he thirsty all the time?

Thank you for your replies ❤️

Yes he had blood tests every thing came back fine.
Hes always been open with any worries and shared them.
He lasts has a drink about a hour before bed.

We have just had something similar with our daughter who is a bit younger- 4x a night peeing every night minimum . Then one eve we talked to her and asked if she was worried about wetting the bed. She said maybe. We said it just doesn’t matter, even if she does we just wash it all. Happens to loads of people. There’s a plastic sheet on the mattress anyway, it’s no big deal. I said go before bed definitely snd if you wake in the night needing it again, definitely go, but if you aren’t sure you need it then try to go back to sleep instead- we paired it with reward chart and saw immediate improvement - only once a night now. Hope this might help a bit if you haven’t already tried. 🤞

What time is he going to bed? Is he maybe not tired enough to fall asleep and the toilet has become a habit of something to do. Could you move bedtime later or change the routine around a bit?

WonderingWanda · 03/02/2026 07:26

Does he always have his bowel movements at bedtime, maybe it all feels a bit uncomfortable to go to sleep with. Try encouraging him to have a bowel movement earlier on in the evening.

What drinks does he drink, we were told to avoid blackcurrant squash and all red drinks
