My 18yo (with autism) has been struggling with depression and anxiety this year… it might not be what you want to hear, but we have found that fluoxetine (anti-depressant), and propanol ol' (helps with the physical symptoms of anxiety) and counselling have really really helped. My son is so much more on an even keel - and he can tell if he has accidentally missed a dose. It took a bit of time to get to this point, he had been having counselling for quite a few months, and we had quite a few GP and mental health worker appts at the local surgery, and the counsellor wrote a letter of support for a trial of medication.

Strenuous exercise has really helped him (with anxiety and focus etc) in the past (weight training at the gym), but currently not possible. May also help with tics as well (my 18 yo doesn’t have tics though, so no experience of this).

Hope you and son both doing well Many thanks! That's the path l have been debating to consider! I thought of trying with a therapist doctor and see how it goes, but the issue is finding a good doctor coz NHS waiting lists are crazy long and his referrals were declined twice saying "does not meet the threshold"😕 Just waisting time, older he gets, more difficult to treat it!

Realise this post is a few months old, but the struggle is still very real for parents.
NHS waiting lists in Newcastle and everywhere for autism and anxiety therapy are brutal. Months, sometimes over a year.

We could not wait. Ended up using Autism 360. The therapists helped us build a daily routine for our son. They gave us specific strategies for his tics and anxiety triggers. We could message them anytime. They replied within a day.

They also gave us video modules to watch with our son. The app also has a library of video modules called Strategy Shorts. Quick two to three minute clips showing you how to handle specific situations. Things like managing tics during homework or calming an anxious child before a meltdown.

That gave us something to do while waiting for the NHS. Not a replacement for face to face. But it kept us from falling apart. That is what got us through.
