How do you manage teething without a dummy?

My little one is 8 months old, did really well previously at self settling and most of the time went down to sleep at night without a fight and without a dummy. She was never really keen on a dummy but had it every now and then. In the past 4 weeks she’s had her first tooth come through and been inconsolable and just not able to sleep with the tooth. Obviously we have given calpol when needed it, but the only thing that will stop her from crying is using the dummy. Every time we put her down to sleep now she just cries and cries and won’t settle without the dummy. I’m hoping this is just a phase as I don’t want her to always rely on the dummy but I wondered how people manage teething without one?! I’ve tried everything else but she just won’t settle.
Thank you in advance

They could potentially find their thumb which some find problematic. I gave a dummy to pacify my children as I didn’t want them sucking their thumb. I only let them have the dummy if they were in the buggy or in their cot. I can’t bear children walking around or talking with dummies in their mouths.

One of my kids had a dummy, the other didn’t. There wasn’t any difference really. If baby is used to having the dummy for comfort then they’ll need it to be comforted. If you’ve introduced one and it works then just stick with it. At 8 months they can replace it themselves so it shouldn’t be a hassle for you because throw enough in the cot at night (I used to do 10!) and they won’t need to wake you if/when it falls out. Just keep it for bedtime only so it doesn’t negatively impact speech or teeth then remove at around age 3 by swapping for a toy.

I am only using it for bed time and it seems to just be recently she’s been wanting it more with the teething. She just won’t find comfort any other way. Thank you for your replies
