We first started scabies treatment 5 months ago, we have done around 6 treatments. I thought we were getting better, my hand it now itching and my so foot has just never gotten better he is 12 months. I have attached photo. Has anyone else gone through this. One minute I’m told it’s still active and the next that it’s post scabie syndrome

oh man. I feel for you. We went through it for a year. Started with my husband in August. We didn’t act quick enough and read enough (just treated my husband) so and by then time we did we all had it. I had very itchy leg and hand and elbow patches. Then we did 3 rounds of treatment. Each time with the laundry of all bedding, bagging up everything (eventually all pillows etc) and the 2 rounds of cream each time. By March we were still experiencing it so got the pills which seemed to work. In the summer I had a panic itch while at my mum and dads and everyone got treated again! I then did it again just for me when we got back.

I do panic if I have a tiny itch now but nothing since. But it is so hard when you are still itchy and have the scabs post treatment and guessing whether it’s been effective. I think for peace of mind, we would go again on treatment but I don’t really know medically apart from sticking to nhs guidelines. We did feel like we had to push for the two rounds of cream for each treatment and for everyone in the family to get the cream - like medical professionals just weren’t well informed enough to make sure everyone had enough cream.

Not sure any of this helps but I feel for you. stick to the treatment. It is the best feeling when the it itch subsides and this is often not for 3 weeks until after treatment

Perhaps a bit more cream behind the nails and inbetween toes if feet the problem. Make sure it stays on for that good 24 hours and reapply on feet in that window to be sure…

Me again! The photo didn’t load the first time. I would definitely go back to the doctor or ask for a specialist referral. Your son’s foot doesn’t look like it has got into the scab phase at all which I think is what happens in post scabie syndrome phase. It very much looks like it is still active.

Thank you, we have done 6 rounds of treatments. My partner has taken the ivermectin but as I’m breastfeeding it’s not recommended. We ended going to out of hours and doctor said it doesn’t look active but I just can’t see what else it could be. His foot flares up and down all the time. Definitely heading back to gp tomorrow as he’s getting bruised and sore from rubbing his feed. I feel horrid for him.

This has also shown up on his knee today, which clearly looks like a burrow so hopefully we get treatment again. When we did out cleaning, we took off couch cushions, bagged all out clothes for 3 day, hoovered top to bottom and bedding. Is these anything you think I’m missing?

Good idea to go to gp - that looks like a fresh one. I honestly think the gp knowledge is really variable. Some didn’t even prescribe us a second dose of cream, advise the whole family use it etc.

I think definitely go again tomorrow.

I think it sounds like you have done everything - towels of course.

last few ideas…

we did one round of treatment in France and they did a spray for furniture etc. wonder if you could get some of this.

I know some people have taken a break away and that has helped - so 4 day Airbnb with clothes to change into etc. just a thought if it gets super stressful.

last thing - when you have done the treatment have you made sure not to wash hands? Any way it might not have stayed on? Been wiped or washed off your son’s feet?

We have thought about booking somewhere else for a few days also.

I will have a look into spray!!

yes, always reapplied onto hands. On top little man’s after food! hopefully get more treatment tomorrow. Thank you for all your advice!!

DS came back from Prague last summer with scabies, stayed in a hostel. He responded well to initial cream but after lots of recurrence he is now using Derbac lotion which seems to have controlled it better. According to all the medical sites it only takes a couple of applications of cream and a good sort out of bedding and clothing. In reality, from social media sites, it really seems to take a long time to clear.

I have had a mild break out but having treated early have managed to keep on top of it. I have got into the habit of putting all washing into the garage ( where the washing machine is) then leaving it a week before washing on a 60deg for everything.

DS is at uni and is hoping that after 2 months away from his flat it is now mite free. He has been treating himself every few weeks and it seems to have cleared. The itching was unbearable for him and he had a few nasty lesions initially that have cleared up. Antihistamines have helped tremendously, he’s taking loratidine and is now able to sleep for longer.

Scabies has become a real problem in universities. Shared living and washing machines are probably contributing since they are encouraged to wash clothing at low temperatures it’s not killing the mites. All the other activities don’t.

Although encouraging low temperatures for washing clothing and bedding we may have to accept that diseases such as scabies are on the increase as a result. It has put me off staying in hotels and holiday lets where they pride their eco friendliness.
