I usually treat it with water and salt but not sure if we need to investigate further. He gets it every 3 months 💔
he is under so many doctors and I just don’t want to drag him back to the gp if it’s not serious !
i will be booking dental appointment Monday morning x

Does he eat a lot of fruit at all?

Spacetours · 18/01/2026 18:55

Is it always in the same place? Lysine tablets get rid of recurrent ulcers for my son. He used to have them crushed up and in yogurt. It wasn’t his toothpaste or dental related or low b vits though these can be connected.

He eats one a school and one after school. That’s it ! I make sure to peel and wash at home but when he is at school not sure how it is provided or handled

It can be a symptom of coeliac disease

No they always different places. Like can be left or right or upper or lower gum. He had blood test definitely not low vit B and I buy him Holland and barret florid free tooth paste and make sure he rinse after use 😭

Try a different toothpaste, one without SLS

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/01/2026 19:00

Is he a bit rough brushing his teeth maybe and making little abrasion that turn into ulcers

I had them all the time as a child, but never as an adult. No idea why.

speak to you gp about the lysine. In our house it’s a miracle worker and if it’s taken semi regularly then no ulcers appear but if it’s forgotten they crop up then clear quicker with it. Some people find it similarly effective for cold sores. Due to the frequency and size of the ulcers they were debilitating and the impact of the product was easy to see. I am not at all a try this weird supplement person but feel like I have a duty to share this one!

Watching as DD gets them too.
didnt realise fluoride in toothpaste was a trigger though

27pilates · 19/01/2026 19:33

It isn’t a trigger @Classworking

Copiousamountsofpulses · 19/01/2026 19:34

Just wondering, why do you buy him fluoride free toothpaste?

Webbing · 19/01/2026 19:41

I got these mouth ulcers quite often as a child. So sore - the poor mite has my sympathy. In my 30s I was diagnosed with low Vitamin B12. The range on blood tests can be very wide so what’s considered in the normal range might too low for him personally. I’m a red head btw and the doctor seemed to think there was a link with needing a higher than average B12 level.

Our son one of five children was the only child out of all of them that used to get a ulcer all the time.soon as one disappeared another would appear.he is now 18 and has not had a ulcer for years.don’t worry too much.

Brunonononooo · 19/01/2026 19:53

I have Crohn’s disease which was found due to recurrent ulcers as a child. I also have coeliac disease which I was told I didn’t have as a child but since had more tests and I do actually have it. I don’t want to concern you too much but I do think our mouths tell us a lot about other issues so if suggestions from PPs don’t help I would push for further investigation - my dentist referred me to the children’s hospital as he was convinced it was something more. Hope you get this sorted, ulcers are awful 😥
