Diabetes ?

My nearly 2yo son started to drink excessively out of nowhere , he’s been drinking 2L a day for the last week. I took him to the GP last Friday when it all began and his blood sugar was 7.4. I was told to monitor his input and output which I have been doing and both are still excessive . GP called Tuesday and just said keep monitoring in and out. This afternoon I have checked his blood sugar myself for the first time and it was 10.4 🥺 . I’m worried . I called the GP straight away and they’ve offered an appointment tomorrow at 4pm .

Does this sound like diabetes ? Anyone have a similar start ?

How is he in himself?
It sounds textbook diabetes, and the GP does not seem to have the same sense of urgency I would expect for a 2yo exhibiting those symptoms. I’d consider children’s A&E, tbh.

He’s ok in himself , A little irritable here and there ! I did think, I even called 111 for additional advice and they said keep pushing GP or A&E ! This was before the 10.4 reading 🤦🏼‍♀️

Type 1 diabetes in a small child is a medical emergency. You need to go to A&E.

pinkcow123 · 15/01/2026 20:25

A&E now, not GP when you have a reading that high in a toddler displaying symptoms

MummyKelJel · 15/01/2026 20:26

I can’t believe the doctors haven’t advised this ?
I’m taking him !

My son has had type 1 diabetes since he was 14. I took him to GP with all typical symptoms. GP said he was fine, just a stomach bug (he was vomitting) i left the surgery and went straight to a & e. He was admitted and stayed in for 5 days whilst he was stabilised. Don't leave it.

The cutoff for T1DM is blood sugar levels over 11.1, so based on that you have 2x levels in a "safe" range which I'm guessing the GP is going off. If symptoms are persisting / deteriorating (and especially if your child is becoming "generally unwell") in any way at all, it is never wrong to seek review, urgently if the situation seems urgent to you.

If you have glucose testing kit do you also have a ketone test?

Baguetteandcheese · 16/01/2026 14:45

Did they dip his wee at all? For glucose and for infections?

My child sugars were so high the machine didn’t read, when he was diagnosed.

Did you get him seen again?

If your child has classic symptoms of diabetes (https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about-diabetes/type-1-diabetes/symptoms) and hasn't had a fingerprint blood sugar tested and that's normal, then until Monday is too long to wait - you should arrange urgent care appointment, or if necessary go to A&E.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes my bloodsugar was was 29 mmol your bloodsugar tends to raise after snacks/meals so be cautious of when you are testing when I was younger I had to test 30 minutes prior to a meal and 30 minutes after. 10.4 isnt potentially dangerously high but isnt a normal reading either and 7 is reasonably good.

Bimblesalong · 16/01/2026 19:20

@MummyKelJel I hope you’ve been seen and have a clearer view of what is going on.

@lilacleopards My son was an A&E case when he was diagnosed age 7. Don’t hesitate to take your daughter to A&E if she is exhibiting symptoms the previous poster has linked to. 3 days’ wait is too long.
