9 month old unusual head shape?

I have a drs appt booked for Monday re this but just wanted to get some (hopefully) reassuring advice so I don’t worry myself sick over the weekend.

i just noticed that my 9 month olds head is this shape from above. To me it looks like it is bulging out to the left side? It’s not flat anywhere and is nothing to do with how she lays, she spends a lot of time on her tummy and is a front sleeper. Anyone had a baby with a similar shaped head? What happened? 😬

Hi my granddaughters head was shaped very much like this plus quite a bulging forehead too. She is 4 now and you would never have guessed her head was that shape. It's probably still a little wider than her cousins and sisters but nothing unusual. I think kids heads come in all shapes and sizes. My son had a 'cone' head for some time. My other granddaughter had a flat head from birth at the back which was nothing to with sleeping she is 3 now with a mass of curls so don't even notice. Please try not to worry. Let us know how you go on x

Did she have two soft spots at birth?

BashfulClam · 09/01/2026 19:45

Heads aren’t perfectly round and her skull is lots of plates so will change shape as she grows. See the GP for reassurance but I’m 98% sure her head is a normal shape

She has two hair whirls as well which is uncommon.

Ask gp for a referral to your local plagiocephally clinic…..for reassurance

DS had a flat head on one side. I can't remember the actual term for it. Health visitors talked a lot of nonsense about tummy time and encouraging him to look the other direction with more toys!

I did end up going to a cranial osteopath which is a bit woo but actually she didn't know about his birth and described exactly what had happened because she diagnosed that basically he had a stiff neck from how he was born.

Anyway, I am not sure whether that did a lot but I felt better after it and he seemed a bit happier and slept better. I can't remember now. I have a lumping great teenager now with a mop of hair and have no idea what his skull is like but he looks gorgeous to me.

Don't worry Flowers

It's just a double crown, while not massively common it's normal

My DS had a head shaped like this, checked over at the plagiocephally clinic, all was fine. Considered getting him a special helmet to reshape his head and really did lose sleep over it.

He’s 17 now with a perfectly normal shaped head. It just gradually improved. It’s good that you have the doctors appointment for reassurance but I bet all will be well.
