So my 8yo son has a case of the trots which started yesterday and I just wondered how long does this go on for? NHS website says 5-7 days but that seems awfully long so I’m just asking here, in your experience as parents, how long had your child had the runs for?

It depends on the cause, food poisoning and viruses will have different longevity. How is your son? Is he still eating and drinking?

Yeah he’s totally fine eating and drinking and fine in himself too, u would never think anything was wrong

When my 2 DS’s had diarrhoea it usually only lasted 24 hours, if more than 2 days I would see a GP, make sure he drinks plenty of unsweetened drinks, check for temperature, don’t worry about not wanting food for one day. GP can prescribe something, but if it’s something he’s eaten, it should pass through 24 hours. If it’s norovirus, then 2/3 days of sickness and/or diarrhoea is pretty normal.

Ok cool so around 4 days max. Then why on earth does nhs say usual is 5-7 days

Because although many are over in a couple of days, up to two weeks is within the normal range, so 5-7 days is an average.

One of mine had diarrhoea for 7 days. I wouldn’t go to the GP unless they’re not drinking or weeing personally.
