My heart breaks for my son with terrible eczema.

Hi all,
Looking for some advice and shared experiences please.

My son has eczema and multiple allergies, and we’re finding it really hard at the moment. His skin flares up regularly and the allergies just add another layer of stress — constant itching, discomfort, and trying to work out triggers feels never-ending.

We’re under the GP and using prescribed creams and steroids , avoiding known triggers etc, but progress feels slow and some days are just exhausting (and upsetting to watch him struggle).

I’d really appreciate any tips or suggestions from parents who’ve been through this.

is it worth going private? We don’t have a lot of spare cash but would do anything to help him.

my son also has adhd so getting him to apply cream is a huge battle.

the one thing that does help is steroid cream but there is so much on social media now about how bad it is for you I can feel myself not wanting to use it.

Not looking for medical advice as such, just real-life experiences and ideas. Thanks in advance — feeling a bit low and overwhelmed with this 10 year battle and would love some hope. ❤️

I have attached a picture x

This article is about baby eczema but hopefully still useful for you!

Oh bless you all

I’m mid 30s now - eczema and in bandages as a child, many many allergies (🙄)

I find no milk, no soya, quite good

no coconut or tree nuts or anything near the nut family, or dairy

fexofenadine 180mg daily (I now have a cat despite being allergic)

I use one body cream. I can’t recommend it as it’s just the one I use that doesn’t give me flare ups (Hollywood beauty cocoa butter) and I’ve had a recent flare up on my armpits due to changing deodorant a few times. I’ve decided to stick to Mitcham and see how I get on

my point being that consistency is key for me - not sure it will help but wish you the best, I know it’s bloody tough!

also: if you can get him a personal air con unit because I can never cope during the heat due to my skin ❤️❤️

Hi OP I’ve struggled all my life and recently started on a topical probiotic. It’s called Defensin and I had to order it from the US. It’s not cheap (especially with shipping) and it takes about 3 months to work but it has basically cleared up. I don’t think I’ll ever be clear of it but it’s now manageable.

I had to order it through a specialist shipping company called MyUS as they didn’t deliver to my location (you order it to a special MyUS address linked to your account and they send it on).

I also ordered the probiotic pill from the same company to increase the chances of success.

Has he already also tried dietary changes (cutting out dairy and/or gluten)?
hope you find something works.

By the way I am 100% sure I am reacting to something environmental but haven’t worked out the trigger. I had years of trying all sorts of creams but got incredibly frustrated with only getting the same advice to put a cream on. It was clear I was reacting to the environment so found it useless to be constantly told to treat the symptoms rather than working out the cause.

Have you tried phototherapy?

Not cheap, I go to somewhere to use a Dermalux LED mostly for cystic acne but they have people who go for eczema and psoriasis too. Often focusing on face, hands and feet. I have a monthly subscription for £100 and can go for five sessions a month.

My brother suffered terribly and phototherapy made a bigger difference than anything, although was hard to access regularly on the NHS back then (he died nearly five years ago and it was probably 5-10 years before that that he had phototherapy).

My son was given this after being hospitalised for two weeks when his eczema became infected - this was several sessions of NHS treatment and had amazing results

Thanks @Odditea - I was intrigued by Defensin when it launched, but couldn't figure out shipping, so I really appreciate your pointers.

I've ordered some spray for my DD who has a dust mite allergy (in our dusty house!) Let me know how you get on with the pill.

I’ve just posted about my daughter and our struggles.

We did go private and ended up being referred back to nhs at our lical hospital for light therapy which didn’t help, then we saw the same doctor we had seen privately on the nhs and he prescribed immunosuppressants which elevated her liver enzymes so we had to stop. Currently waiting for biologics injections but she’s too close to 18 so the referral has been rejected but then struggling to find someone who will treat children privately.

i understand the financial worry, my mum paid for the appointment in our case, from memory it was £250. It’s all the waiting times that have caused things to drag, so frustrating as if she was a year younger she’d have a appointment by now.

My sympathy to all you mums, you are not terrible parents you are just going through a really hard thing.

Grounded Body Scrub do a Grapefruit coffee scrub that clears up Eczema in a few uses. It’s got load of natural ingredients in it and stops the itching pretty much straight away. You can google some of the people that have used it and their results but if give it a try it’s incredible
