Brain mri

Hi just wondering if anyone knows when a small child..in this case my 5 year old grandson..is referred by pediatrics for a brain mri how quickly they let you know? Even if it's good news. My health anxiety is already through the roof and would just like to know if results can be quick even if the results are good?

I have to have regular MRI's it does tend to be department dependent. They will get the results within days, I have in the past rung them up to find out if there are any issues a couple of weeks later. But this year my follow-up phone call was about 3 months later and I'd already seen the letter they sent to my GP before they got around to ringing me.

So I guess it's a how long is a peace of sting question really.

It depends on the reason for the referral. If it's to look for a tumour the MRI will be analysed quickly. If it's something else it may take a bit longer. For my brain MRI they never let me know it was all fine. I eventually found out from a private rheumatologist 🤦 so if you don't here get his parents to call. Best of luck.

It would be to look for a tumour as he keeps vomiting. It's me who has pushed for it as pediatrics seem to think it's not but you just never know. Thanks so much for replying. Come to think of it when I had one years ago for migraines they never let me know! I noticed it years later on patient access! Please could I ask what your symptoms were to have the mri?

It's crazy isn't it that the have the results so soon but don't let you know straightaway. Just adds to the 'scanxiety!)

Mine were neurological issues with the possibility of a brain tumour but it was an outside chance and not an expected outcome. They said that the results would be ready in about nine weeks 🤦 but never actually let me know. Well done you for pushing. I would just set a reminder in your calendar to call every week from two weeks after the scan.

Wow 9 weeks!! So glad it wasn't that for you 🙏 oh I won't need a reminder thanks I'll be reliving it everyday from the moment he has it 😓. I'm terrible x

If they find something, they will let you know very quickly. The radiographers will contact the radiologist as soon as they see it.

The scan will be read very quickly but the report takes longer. We usually wait about 5/6 weeks but if they saw something sinister they’d be in touch within days.

Geneticsbunny · 29/12/2025 18:48

If they find something, you will probably be phoned within a week and they will say they have a cancellation and you can come in early for the results. Take someone with you and ask if you can audio record the consultation so that you can listen to it again if you need to.

The OP is the grandmother. She can’t phone asking for the results.
