Worried about haemangioma ulcerating

I hope somebody has some experience with this and can reassure me.

My DC is 4 months old and has a fairly large haemangiona / strawberry birthmark on the upper arm. Over the last few days a dry white patch has appeared on it and I’m very worried that this is the beginning of ulceration.

Can anyone give any advice? Should I be applying Vaseline?

First and foremost, if you are concerned, you should go to the GP. They will not judge you over your concern for your baby.

I had a large strawberry haemangioma, but no experience with ulceration.

totally agree re: GP, I should have added that we’re currently on holiday so can’t go to our local health services.

My dd had a haemangioma. A doctor once told me haemangiomas sometimes have eczema-like skin associated with them. His advice was to put moisturizer on it.

This is what GOSH have to say:

If your child’s haemangioma develops an ulcer, it will need special attention until it heals:
^^
Wash the area twice a day to keep it clean.
^^
Add some Dermol® 600 bath emollient to the bath water and gently pour it over the area.
^^
Leave the area to dry naturally- do not rub or pat it dry.
^^
Once the area is dry, cover the whole haemangioma with a non-sticky silicone dressing. These are available on prescription from your GP.

So I suggest going to a pharmacy and asking for the local equivalent.

IIf you are away for long, can you use your travel insurance to see a doctor?

Thanks for all the intel, very useful. I’ve been given some cream by a pharmacist today and hopefully that will help 👏🏻.
