Scarlet fever

I think my daughter may have strep throat/scarlet fever. She’s been to the doctors at A&E today and they’ve said she’s got tonsillitis and got penicillin.
Although I think she may have scarlet fever/strep throat. Her tonsils are red but haven’t really got many white spots on, she has red spots on the roof of her mouth a slight temperature but we’ve been keeping on top of medication so it hasn’t be able to get too high. Head ache and today she’s come out in rash on chest and tummy and also very red flushed cheeks. (The rash on tummy could be heat rash I’m unsure)

The doctor at a&e didn’t check her tummy for any rashes also he didn’t look in her ears or anything just her throat and listened to chest.

If she did have strep throat/scarlet fever would the penicillin do the job for it or will she need something else?

it’s the same treatment for both. Did they give you a ten day course? You just need to keep an eye and go back to a&e if it gets any worse

@Cuppaandbiscuit no only 5 days, 3 times a day, I’ve got a 7 week old baby as well terrified she’s gunna get it

The strawberry tongue and rash was always the telling sign for us. Also it made my son very very unwell being sick, extreme sore throat, very high temp. You could take her back to GP and ask for a swab. My DS had it 3 times in a year! Drs were that surprised they swabbed every time. He’s had tonsillitis a couple of times since and although unwell not as unwell as with SF.

@whereareyousleep what did they give him to help treat it when he had scarlet fever?

10 days antibiotics are the only thing that clears it. Swabs come back within a couple of days so they could just extend the course she already has. Hope she feels better soon

did They give you amoxicillin? We always had a 10 day course of pen v, 4 times a day. I think a 7 day course of amoxicillin, 3 times a day is also a treatment though. I’m not a medical professional though so please ask a doctor.

How is your little one doing?

Lauren8642 · 15/12/2025 22:57

@Cuppaandbiscuit no we got given penicillin (strawberry one if that makes a difference) shes loads better today! Can tell the antibiotics are definitely doing the job she’s not needed any Calpol or nurofen today. Hoping that she stays on the mend as doesn’t go backwards. Also hoping my 7 week old doesn’t catch anything 🤞
