Can anyone help identify this? At my wits end after over a month.
Just on face. Doctors don’t know.
Tried steroid cream, natural cream from lush, antibiotics, antifungal, antihistamine. Tried cutting out dairy. Tried hypoallergenic washing.
It’s only getting worse.
TIA parents.

Oh poor sausage. It looks a bit like perioral dermatitis but I’m no expert.

One thing I will say - if you’ve only seen GPs so far, do ask for a referral to a paediatric dermatologist. My DD had a rash on her thighs for years, tried all sorts via the GP to no avail, eventually got referred to dermatologist who correctly diagnosed it in 2 minutes.

Thank you so much for your reply - this has given me a new hope. I hadn’t even considered there might be such thing as a paediatric dermatologist! 😅thanks so much!

I agree ask for a referral.

Has the GP suggested you try all those things? Just seems a high number of different treatments in quick succession which may not give any of them time to work.

Have you considered all possible causes? Washing powder, central heating, mould/allergens in the home, new food...

Start a detailed diary now to give you some data.

I work in Dermatology, we have a pediatric consultant dermatologist and 2 pediatric dermatology nurses. Just ask your gp for a referral, hopefully the waiting list isn’t too long.

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Yes, we’ve been to the GP he’s registered to 3 times, seen a different doctor each time who all said different things. First dr said eczema and prescribed the steroid cream. 1.5 weeks later it had spread to his eyes so we went back and this dr said dermatitis, prescribed an antibiotic oral and cream. We finished the course and went back, the 3rd Dr prescribed anti fungal cream and antihistamine at the same time. To be fair, that was only last week however if the rash had at the least stayed the same since then, I wouldn’t be worried, it’s just getting worse though, never mind any sort of improvement.

I’ll definitely be asking for the referral. Thanks all.

Has allergic dermatitis been considered? Sounds like the GPs are treating the symptom without considering the cause. Definitely needs referral onward.

Jb141 · 13/12/2025 11:27

This is exactly how I’ve felt, like they just wanted to try quick fixes without considering the root of the issue.

Yes I think rashes are really really difficult to understand/ identify as there are many possible causes and so many look similar - which is why dermatologists exist!! Do push for referral. Good luck

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 13/12/2025 11:45

Could it be impetigo? Is it spreading and does it crust over to golden crusts?

Alicorn1707 · 13/12/2025 11:45

I agree with @minipie it does "look like" perioral dermatitis, check these pics

Definitely go for the referral @Jb141 you are doing everything right in trying to find out answers for your son, poor wee man.

Jb141 · 13/12/2025 12:00

Thank you so much. I feel so much better. I’ll be back at the Drs Monday asking for the referral.
