Oral thrush in teen

My 15 year old wasn’t allowed to have his braces fitted today as the orthodontist said he had thrush on his gums and they were inflamed and swollen due to not brushing well. She said he is missing bits when brushing and it’s caused the thrush.

have bought him some new toothbrush heads, floss and daily corsodyl although on googling, I can see corsodyl can cause staining so he’s only going to use it for a week. I’ve stood over him and watched him mouthwash, brush his teeth and floss and ensured he’s brushed well. I suspect he’s been staring at his phone while brushing and so the phone is now banned from the sink!

his throat and tongue are fine. I’m just wondering if anyone has any experience of oral thrush with teens. I’ve read that he may still need medication to treat the fungus so I thought that after a week, if he still has the white patches on his gums, I will get the medical treatment but I’m not sure if it’s a dentist, pharmacist or gp job. Also, which medication is best? Tablet, gel, mouthwash etc.

Any info much appreciated.

Is he asthmatic and using a steroid inhaler?

No, he’s not. He definitely eats more sweets than he should because him and his mates pop to the shop after school some days for sweets. I’ve told him he needs to stop that

i think he needs a GP appointment, to identify the cause (he’s not on antibiotics for acne or anything?) plus treat with something like Nystatin (anti fungal)

Thank you. No he’s not on antibiotics or any medication. The orthodontist said it was due to poor brushing so I’ve made sure he’s improved his brushing technique. But I read online it’s very unusual for healthy teens to get oral thrush so wasn’t sure if it was just because of poor brushing. He has no plaque or fillings and he is very healthy, but probably not with the healthiest of diet like many teens

I’m a pharmacist and would definitely recommend discussing this with his GP, hope it gets better x

Thank you. I’ll make an appt today then. Do you know if it is unusual for teens to get oral thrush or is it quite common if they haven’t been brushing well?

GP has not wanted to see him but has prescribed nystatin so mustn’t be concerned. Thanks for input all
