20 month old unwell, should I get her seen?

Hi,

my 20 month old daughter started with a cough last Tuesday, high temp and other cold symptoms followed over the next few days and took the rest of the family down one by one.

she seemed to turn a corner and was fever free Friday morning to Saturday evening (last night) where it jumped back up again. Is this unusual? Should I be calling 111 and trying to get her seen out of hours today? I’m a bit of an over worrier due to a scare we had with her as a very young baby, so never know when I’m being over the top now. She’s awful to get any meds in to as well, which doesn’t help!

OP, if you’re worried, call 111 or take her to a doctor. You know your DC better than anyone else.

How high is temperature, is she eating well and mostly ok in herself, wet nappies etc, does temperature come down after calpol. I would say if she’s not showing improvement after 5 days, then she should be seen, call 111 for advice.

Temp is coming down with calpol, it’s mostly hit mid 38, once right at the beginning of the illness it was over 39. She’s eating less, but we’re still breastfeeding and she’s been doing more of that than she usually does so wet nappies have been fine etc.

I’m not immediately worried for her, more a bit concerned that the fever went away for 24 hours and then came back? And wondering if that is normal or not

My 18 month old was up and down with fevers and cough next week. I did take them to the GP on Wednesday as I was worried about rib retractions.

Not eating isn't too bad especially if breastfeeding as they are getting energy as well as hydration.

If it were me, I would wait until Monday for the GP but be on the lookout for red flags like no wet nappies, rash, very sleepy, really irritable, fever NOT coming down with Calpol etc; or even just your own feeling that something isn't right.

I would get her seen because the fever had been gone for over 24 hours and come back that’s a reason to get her seen.

If she is otherwise well in herself I would get her a GP appointment tomorrow. Is she weeing and drinking OK? Not breathing too fastvor sucking the skin under the rib cage when breathing?

I used to see loads of kids with stories like this. Usually found they'd developed a secondary infection and may need antibiotics.
You could wait until tomorrow if temperature coming down with Calpol but I would also never not see a child like this if the parents wanted it. Much rather see 10 slightly ill kids and send them on their way than see none and miss the seriously ill one.

see I was wondering about a secondary infection. She’s basically slept on me all day and has woken much brighter, still a bit warm though. I’ll monitor tonight and obviously will get her seen overnight if she needs it, but I’ll be calling the GP first thing tomorrow. My pal who’s a nurse popped over and listened to her chest and it’s clear, so I’m thinking maybe throat or ears perhaps. Thanks everyone

This happened with my DD last week.
floored with a cold, picked up for a day then hit with tonsillitis.
i would get her seen to rule out ears and throat.

awful when their poorly.

Lookingforthejoy · 01/12/2025 18:23

@Thisisfinethisisallfine how is she today?

Thisisfinethisisallfine · 01/12/2025 18:49

@Lookingforthejoy she’s so much brighter today thank you! We did see a GP who said one of her ears does look infected, but couldn’t say if it’s viral or bacterial, so we’ve got antibiotics to start if her fever persists in to tomorrow (as that’s more likely to be bacterial due to the length of time).

thank you for asking ❤️
