Asthma?

My 5 year old daughter started complaining last week that she was struggling to breath, and that she was worrying she was going to die. We put this down to anxiety as we’ve had to have some conversations around family members passing away recently.

However, the feeling she was having continued and she started to get really upset about it. During these episodes she would start crying and get very upset, but can’t really put into words how she’s feeling other than it’s in her throat and she feels she can’t fully breath in. So we took her to the GP who has said probable asthma and prescribed her brown and blue inhaler.

She seems to be fine through the day but in the afternoon seems to have these episodes where she is getting short of breath and really distressed. She’s taken her blue inhaler on two occasions now, which has seemed to calm her down in around ten minutes. But she will still say afterwards that her chest is sore and I think she is still struggling with an ongoing feeling of her breathing not feeling fully normal. She will also complain her tummy is sore at points too.

is this normal with someone recently diagnosed with asthma? Should we just wait for the brown inhaler to have a little longer to kick in and give some further relief for her just in general?

just looking for some advice as someone who’s not dealt with any of this before 🫣

Did you get the spacer with the inhalers?

@justasking111 she does yet but it’s hard to know if she’s using it properly!

My DS has had asthma from 1 year old, his symptoms were mainly wheezing and coughing, he never experienced a bad tummy. Is your DD experiencing symptoms after exercise as that can bring on asthma attacks. Did you mention the passing of family members to GP, I”m not an expert, but it does maybe sound more like a panic attack, which can mimic asthma symptoms. Is she worried maybe that coming home from school there maybe more bad news, is she ok at school, can do PE without getting more out of breath than normal.

There's other conditions that can cause breathlessness. I would go back to the GP. I'd also order an oximeter to check and record her oxygen levels. Check you tube for how to use spacer for young child.
