He was sick all over the shared table with DD sat next to him 😫 She said she moved back and didn't get any on her, the table was cleaned with 'sick dust' she said and then she sat there the rest of the day...what are the chances of her catching the bug do you think?

She's just had chicken pox and now full of a cold so this will be the icing on the cake 😕

It depends why he was sick, if he’s got norovirus it’s fairly likely she’ll catch it I would say. If he’s got the same cold virus as her and that’s why he was sick then it won’t affect her. If he’s got food poisoning he won’t catch it. He couldn’t eaten something he’s allergic to etc.

verycloakanddaggers · 26/11/2025 17:04

Was he sent home?

Tbh she is not much more likely to catch it than if he'd vomited in the car on the way home, just you wouldn't know.

If it is Norovirus, it is very infectious, so prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Onyoupop · 26/11/2025 17:06

Yeah he was sent home. I know no one can tell me either way, just have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best like you say! Just the last thing we need at the moment! I'll be spending the next couple of days with baited breath!

Sick dust is amazing. Makes it all solidify and means it's easier to clear up. We used it at work.

The school will have a cleaning protocol that includes disinfection.

Remind yourself that the fact he vomited, it was cleaned and he left is less bad than if he had been ill all day, sat next to her sharing pencils then vomited in the car!

You should know in 48 hours...

Onyoupop · 26/11/2025 17:30

I was just wondering how long it would take for her to show symptoms if it's neurovirus and she's caught it!

He was only sick at the beginning of the afternoon she had all morning say with him sharing pencils unfortunately! Time will tell!

It takes 12-48 hours.

Fifiellz · 26/11/2025 17:48

I’m a childminder and one of my minded children threw up all over the dinner table, over the other kids and into their dinner 🤢 Not one of the other children caught it and it was a tummy bug as his brother had apparently had it earlier in the week. So 🤞all will be well.

Guessing you might be emetophobic? Same thing happened to DD before autumn hols and luckily nothing happened. She even stepped in it and was also touching her mouth a lot that day due to a wobbly tooth (shuddering at the thought again).

There was a wave of noro going on at school the same time, definitely not just food poisoning or flu. I was obsessively checking ChatGPT about norovirus incubation times. The average time is 34 hours, so if nothing happens by tomorrow evening then you should be in the clear.

And there are honestly a lot of reasons kids are sick in school. If there isn't an obvious virus sweeping around then you can easily assume it's not contagious. DD comes home at least once a week saying someone was sick in class but it doesn't make me anxious, the exception being that one time there was clearly noro going around.

It would need to be bleach to kill noro. I would hope the school would use something effective to properly clean a table that was vomited on, but sick dust won’t disinfect.

kiwiblue · 26/11/2025 17:57

Twice this has happened to my children, where the child right next to them at school threw up right by them. Both times they didn't catch it. Fingers crossed for you!

Crumpel · 26/11/2025 17:59

I've cleaned up plenty of sick at school (wearing gloves but still obvioisly in close proximity to it and having been close to the vomitting child earlier in the day) and never caught a sickness bug from it.

Onyoupop · 26/11/2025 18:02

I wouldn't go as far as saying I have emetophobia but I do really struggle with vomit.

Hopefully she will escape it!

How did it go? Was she ok?

Onyoupop · 02/12/2025 06:20

She was absolutely fine thankfully! 😊

Aww I’m so glad. ❤️

bedtimestories · 04/12/2025 21:47

Both of my kids have vomited into my hands, I've never caught a sickness bug from them

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/12/2025 21:53

If he’s got noro and threw up sitting next to her it won’t really matter what they cleaned it with I’m afraid. You’ll know within about 12-48hrs. As will a significant proportion of the class.
