Hives for dairy allergy or something else?

I am just looking to see if anybody else has had any similar experiences with their children because I am a total loss on what to do now.

My little girl is nearly 2 years old and in September she came out with hives over her face and on her torso which I put down to her having cranberry juice for the first time. I took her to the walk-in and I gave piriton and they agreed with me that it would possibly be the cranberry juice and it went down with Piriton I left just assuming that she had an allergy to berries.

She then had a viral infection a couple of weeks ago and halfway through that viral infection she came up in hives all over her body really aggressive hives everywhere. I took her to the walk-in because I was so concerned about her and the doctor then referred us for allergy testing because she said that it could possibly be a dairy allergy .

Since then, I’ve been giving gluten-free dairy free foods also cutting out tomato and citrus because I’ve notice that they also trigger her. Since being dairy free, I have noticed that she hasn’t flared as much she has mildly flaring but no one near as much as what she was.

I’ve taken her a soft play this morning and she’s woken up with no hive. She’s had Weetabix and oat milk and she’s been absolutely fine. She’s bumped heads really really mildly bumped heads not even enough to leave a mark on the other child and she’s come up in a hive where she’s bumped her head . I’m now concerned that this may possibly not be a dairy allergy at all and it could be something triggering her that every time she gets a scratch or a bump she comes up in a hive.

Has anybody else had anything like this before? And if so what did it end up being? I have booked for a doctor’s appointment later just to doublecheck because I am a bit concerned that this bump has caused a hive when she’s been hive free this morning?

Thank you

Viruses often cause hives in kids.

As a mum to a child with a severe dairy allergy, I don't think it's at all common to suddenly become allergic at age 2. They're usually born with it / have signs at weaning.

Dairy is in soooo many things and is very nutritious so I'd not eliminate unless I really had to

Oh and my son always gets hives after a bump or bad scratch. He has dermatographia. It's very common

Ah thank you I was looking at this condition and she fits it! Is there any treatment for it?

if you have referred for allergy testing going gluten free with no evidence of a problem with gluten is not correct. As a coeliac I was advised to continue to eat gluten right up till diagnosis was confirmed as stopping eating gluten can cause a false negative.

I am aware of this, however I am not sure it is gluten so she is having gluten foods now just dairy free. I have done whatever I have had to do to prevent her hives as they have been horrendous and as I’m sure you can imagine, not pleasant for a baby!

I'm not aware of any cure for dermatographia, but I will say that now he's 5 it's much better.

You say the hives aren't pleasant for her? Funnily, my son never notices his at all and I am always the one to point them out. Maybe he's odd though!

Rose family = apples, strawberries, rose, peaches, apricots, blackberries + more.

Watch for lemon scented products as they often use apple to enhance the smell / flavour.
