What were signs your child had tongue tie and what made you get it cut? (Formula feeding)

Why are you considering it? We considered it because baby doesn’t latch well and has horrendous reflux but the pediatrician advised against it as she’s gaining really well and the reflux meds are working. We had our consult and the wound and aftercare were a bit shocking for us so we decided against it last week.

It was the best decision I made for dd2. Dd1 was extremely difficult to breastfeed- she didn’t latch well and it was extremely painful and I pretty much dreaded every feed. Dd2 was diagnosed by chance as I mentioned she was struggling to latch to a midwife at the hospital and she said a tongue tie specialist was on duty and got her to take a look. She did the procedure there and then which I’m grateful for because I didn’t have time to overthink it and I’m so glad we got it done. From then on, she was a dream to feed and never had anymore issues and i very much regret not getting dd1 snipped

Why do you need it cut if you are formula feeding?

my son had a tongue tie and breast feeding was super painful but we switched to formula / bottles and he was fine.

obviously if it’s severe and baby isn’t gaining weight then an OMF professional or Health visitor can advise.

DS had very tight tongue tie but with help and support was eventually able to latch and we could breastfeed. As he was feeding and gaining weight, there was no reason to get it cut so we never did.

I didn’t cut child 1, in hindsight I potentially should have

did cut child 2 because feeding was painful

Went on to become a tongue tie practitioner and see a lot of bottle fed babies
it may be worth a consultation if lots of dribbling milk, clicking, reflux, long feeds. About half of babies with tongue tie and reflux come off meds post tongue tie division according to the research and around 70% see improvement in reflux symptoms.

if feeding is fine, then no need for division and not always a need when feeding is complex. Some simple changes/bodywork etc can all make a big difference. Of the babies with tongue tie I see we divide around 60%, the rest don’t need it.

Maybe have a chat with a local tongue tie practitioner.
