9 year came down with a sudden virus last Wednesday- headache, nausea, chesty cough, sore throat, achey legs the works. Had some home tests for flu and covid as my mum is immunocompromised but she’s tested negative for them all 🤷‍♀️She’s managing to eat and drink so been riding it out at home assuming vital. However last night she somehow managed to fall off the couch and land on her left hand side at her ribs without putting her hands down. No obvious brushing but it’s very sore still this morning. she’s just really miserable with everything sore and now the area around her ribs too. Should I take her to get checked? We don’t have a drop in walk in centre or out of hours near here, so it would be the large next town over a&e which feels unnecessary for what it is, and with 4 kids in tow 🤦‍♀️but she’s miserable and sore despite nurofen and paracetamol and my stupid googling suggests she does need seen in case she’s hurt her spleen. Any advice welcome!

If you phone 111 they might be able to get you in with an out of hours GP, which would at least mean no wait at A&E.

I had a swollen spleen after glandular fever, it's pretty obvious to feel under your ribs, and it's mainly activities like high diving, combat sports and rugby they recommend against. I know people have ruptured their spleens coming off their bikes, but they generally land something pointy (the handle bar) into their spleen or experience a big change in pressure (hitting the water from the 10m diving board). I would be surprised if falling off the sofa could cause spleen damage, but equally I would want a second opinion like you. 111 could at least tell you red flags to watch out for.

In the end you will have to go with your gut as a parent :/
