Mystery rash and furiously upset baby

I'm at a loss and turning to Mumsnet. Can anyone suggest what on earth we can try for our eight month old's skin.

Five weeks ago she had a dribble rash. It became infected and we were prescribed a steroid cream. This made the rash worse. We've now done seven days on a new cream, thinking it could instead be fungal. It has made no difference. We've tried Epaderm, Vaseline, E45 - all make it worse.

She's agitated and itchy and sleep is non- existent. It's only on her chin and cheeks.

We're obviously going back to the doctor. But I've really no idea what I need to push for here. Any advice welcome.

Has she had a fever, could it be shaped cheek?

She's had a cold and slightly raised temperature for a couple of days, but the rash pre-dates that. I had thought slapped cheek but I think it's gone on too long to be that.

When did you start weaning her? I'm wondering if it could be something she's recently started eating.

You've not changed washing powder / soap / your perfume at all?

Does an antihistamine provide any relief?

Poor little thing. Ds2 used to get this in reaction to food (mostly fruit), we took to carefully washing his face and slathering it in vaseline which mostly helped, he grew out of it eventually.

She was weaned at six months, and we can't immediately find a food link. The only possible trend is when she's had wheat. But it's not flared every time she has it, and the rash seems in a very specific place. We might try cutting it oi5 her diet just to see though, as I'm at such a loss.

So frustrating isn't it! Good to hear your little one grew out of it.

The bacteria that cause impetigo and scarlet fever can also cause something called scalded skin syndrome - I would ask the GP about that too.
