Does Right to Choose for ADHD Meds (teens) exist?

I am going round in circles online, as providers state that their meds fall under right to choose and then it seems they mean the assessment part. This is for my daughter who has a diagnosis of ADHD and now wants to try meds.

We will not be using CAHMS due to dire treatment by them over the past few years, so unfortunately need to use some savings to pay, unless I can find this elusive 'right to choose' option.

I know that my GP will do shared care once fully titrated but there are hefty outlays before that so this is what I am checking for.

Nope. You have to pay for the meds appointment all titration appointments and the private prescription and the actual cost of the meds monthly. I wouldn't be so sure your gp will accept shared care with a private company either. The guidelines surrounding shared care are changing every few months at the moment.

Have you already had the assessment? I know somewhere in Yorkshire through rtc that has their own prescribing service for children and young people.

@bigmixyes had the assessment a couple of years ago but at that time my teen wasn’t keen on starting meds.

@BlackCatGoesHome My GP practice had an MDT (or whatever they have) to discuss my pleas for shared care and they wrote a policy off the back of that. When I checked with them over the Summer (as teen wasn’t talking about meds) it was still valid. At this point we would agree to carry on if she finds them helpful, by saving elsewhere.

So it looks as though we have to pay the initial outlay, thanks for the info.

‘was talking about meds’

Where are you? CAMHS prescribed meds for my daughter straight from private appointment. I didn’t need to pay anything.

unfounded it really straightforward - would you not even give them a try for meds?

FuzzyWolf · 17/11/2025 21:56

Often they will want to assess you themselves in order to prescribe and you might struggle with that if your daughter’s original assessment was via the NHS because you can’t have a second NHS assessment (which RTC is). Then some providers can only prescribe if your GP accepts shared care, which many don’t.

I can’t cope with CAHMS anymore. They were making me ill. I have involved PALs, my GP and the Chief Exec. They rejected her twice for assessment, so we went privately and she scored high in both types of ADHD. Then when we approached them for meds they prevaricated for a while and then sent some questionnaires for school, the same ones which were in her two rejected assssment packs and her private one. They are deliberately obtuse and they lie. It’s Cambridgeshire.
