If he’s struggling to breathe when coughing I wouldn’t wait till tomorrow, I would ring 111 now. He may need antibiotics. I spent a week in hospital with covid and pneumonia a month ago. It’s truly horrible. I needed IV steroids and antibiotics.

he can breathe fine. It’s just when he sleeps, you can hear liquid or mucus goes up his throat and he chokes on them and lose breath because he chokes ? Did that happen to you too ?

Another vote for ring 111

Cadenza12 · 16/11/2025 16:51

Just phone 111

youalright · 16/11/2025 16:54

Sounds like acid reflux/heartburn. I went to the gp once convinced I had sleep apnea as I kept randomly choking in my sleep. He gave me omeprazole and I was fine. If his breathing is fine take him to gp.
Edit just seen your taking him tomorrow.

Okiedokie123 · 16/11/2025 17:01

Sleeping propped up on pillows will help. So he is more upright.

Can Covid cause reflux ?

I have exactly the same thing at the moment (and tested positive for COVID). The mucus it is producing is extraordinary.

I don’t know what medicine you can take at 7. I ordered some fresh lemons and cut one up and put boiling water on it with a spoon of honey and that has been helping. If you can encourage him to blow his nose a lot particularly before bed. I don’t know if they do nasal sprays for children or decongestants. It is horrible - I am constantly spitting up phlegm and I’m an adult and know what’s happening so I imagine it’s horrific for a child!

Can Covid cause reflux ?

Yeah it can cause it or exacerbate it

Troubler · 16/11/2025 18:08

Also keep his liquids up as I am finding producing all this mucus is v dehydrating

mamagogo1 · 16/11/2025 18:21

@MuteDS

i get this every time I get a cough, Covid or otherwise (long before Covid existed) it sounds a lot worse than it actually is I find though overnight is when I struggle more.

if you are concerned call 111 or an out of hours walk in

Thank you this was reassuring. We decided to take him A&E after we put his siblings to sleep because he developed neck pain when moving it forward and backward.

also, when you choke at night, do you feel like y swollowing something constantly before choking episode occur ?

Fingers crossed he’s ok and you get seen quickly!

Oh goodness, DH and I both had this with a mystery illness a few years before Covid. It was terrifying, to us it felt a bit like we would imagine drowning - DH had symptoms exactly 2 weeks behind me. One day when I had turned a corner he got up choking with bulging eyes and (tmi) I was literally pulling clear mucus out his mouth. We were both ill for 6 weeks. I had 2 lots of antibiotics and an inhaler - none of it did anything.

Weirdly we have met a few people over the years who had similar at the time - thinking has been it was an earlier coronavirus.

We tried many things over the weeks and I did loads of research. Trying to limit mucus production as much as possible- eat & drinks things as close to the bodies natural temperature and PH level and a couple of spoons of apple cider vinegar a day helped cut through the mucus. Once better it was months before I could drink something chilled or eat ice cream, I had to have a hot drink to hand or I just coughed and coughed.

I really hope DS is okay and no one else comes down with it.

OtterMummy2024 · 16/11/2025 20:11

Respiratory syncytial virus and metapneumovirus both cause lots of snot, including in adults.

You can't change your body's pH, if you did you would die. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507807/

OP I hope your son is ok, you've done the right thing going to A&E. I had to take my baby to A&E with COVID last winter, it caused projectile vomiting due to the snot build up. They recommended saline nasal drops to thin it.

TheTwenties · 16/11/2025 20:26

@OtterMummy2024I’m not sure if the PH comment was in response to me but I said eat & drink things close to bodies natural PH not try and change the bodies PH. Very acidic things for example will make the body produce more mucus so best avoided when already over producing.

Kattouswhiskers · 16/11/2025 22:35

DD has this at the moment (we don't have any tests in but assuming it's covid). Lots of steamy baths and the benylin cough stuff with guanfensin (which thins mucous) is helping.

Only one night- that was the worst of it.

MuteDS · 17/11/2025 19:08

So apparently he has scarlet fever too. They took sample to confirm and gave him penicillin ! Crazy
