Anyone have children on Montelukast for a chronic cough?
would really appreciate any positivity if so, has it helped etc

My son was given this when he was around 6 . It worked but ut gave him really bad anxiety to the effect that I couldn't leave the room which I didn't know was a side effect of them . When I went back to the dr and told her I wasnt giving them to him , she didn't seem surprised when I explained my reasons. I was then given salbutamol which helped.

it works really well for asthma but it’s side effects are more hidden in children and it gives them anger and nightmares. It can cause personality changes. Please be wary. Even my specialist knew this was common and potentially serious.

Honestly, I would only use it in emergency situations now. I know it is not for acute issues but it will make a difference in a severe case and worth keeping for holidays etc.

Thank you for responding, low and behold she has been on it for 2 week and the bed time routine is now a living nightmare and she’s woken every night through the night crying for the past week which isn’t like her.
Does anyone have any experience of just giving them the montelukast when you know symptoms are starting rather then daily?

Just go back to your GP and tell them the montelukast isn't working out. There are other options.

Unfortunately this was our last resort, we have tried everything else. I have delayed it for over a year

This is the only way I would recommend using it. It really works and is potentially a lifesaver if you are on holiday etc. it’s just the side effects are not worth using it 365 days a year in my opinion.

Look in to MSM and quercetin as an extra thing to try.
