DS not put any weight on for 2 months

Posting here also for traffic.

My DS has always been on the smaller side but having weighed him every 2 weeks he doesn't seem to have put any weight on at all for the last 8 weeks and I'm really panicking something is wrong. Hes a CMPA and soya allergy baby so can't have any cheese etc. Hes now also entered the fussy phase so I'm even more worried his weight might drop. He does appear to have grown in height.

He’s full of energy and seems well, but his weight has basically stayed the same (around 23 lb 9 oz) for about eight weeks, which is making me really anxious. We’ve got a dietitian appointment on 1 Dec but I’m struggling not to worry.

Has anyone else had a toddler with who plateaued for a while and then caught up? Any tips that helped? I've attached his weights for reference.

Thanks 💛

Hi, I really wouldn't worry until the appointment, this may be quite normal. My DS has been under the care of a specialist since we had some issues earlier this year with low weight gain, anaemia and gut stuff. The doctor he sees has said that they don't recommend weighing anymore often than monthly (and even that she felt was overdoing it) because of the possibilities that a normal plateau would lead to unnecessary worry. There is a lot going on with toddlers, they becoming more active, trying (and rejecting) new foods, etc.

My DS is now bigger than his twin brother, definitely not the case ten months ago!

Honestly I wouldn't have had a clue if my toddler didn't put on weight because I didn't weigh them, and they turned out OK. Weighing this often isn't helping anyone. I'd stop with the weighing so often, and try to relax a bit.

I would honestly stop worrying. There comes a point when toddlers slim down and weight remains the same or even decreases and that's completely normal.

Wait for the dietitian appointment and honestly unless you've been asked to weigh him so frequently it might actually be beneficial to stop weighing him so often if it's adding to you anxiety.

How old are they?

My DS was so so chunky, by 6 months old he was over 10kg. Then he stayed there for around a year 😂

I don’t think child weight is particularly linear.

Unless your little one is particularly young I worry about weighing them too often.

Plateauing is totally normal and toddlers do absolutely seem to stay the same size for several months then all of the sudden have a big growth spurt. I couldn’t tell you exactly how long they plateaued for though, I don’t think many people track weight like that beyond the first 6 months. I only weighed mine when there was some specific need e.g. weight based medication or car seat fitting. I wonder if you’re giving yourself unnecessary anxiety by still doing it. Normally you just notice one day the trousers look a bit short and the poppers on the vest are tight. You have the dietician appointment anyway so hopefully they can reassure you but if he’s happy in himself, sleeping well, clothes don’t seem looser etc. then personally I wouldn’t be worried and I imagine it’s one of those cases where more info isn’t necessarily a good thing.

@CotBedMug he's almost 21 months.

if I remember correctly this is a very normal age to plateau.

miniworry · 09/11/2025 21:38

@CotBedMug but would it be for almost 8 weeks? I know they don't keep up the rapid weight gain they did in the first year but I would have expected him to put some weight on at lease and I think that's what's worrying me. My DD was always on the 75th centile with no allergies so I felt like I never worried about her weight!

@Bitzee I think you are 100% right that I've probably given myself more anxiety for doing it, however now I feel like I have to in order to see if he's gone up any more because he hasn't last time , it's a vicious circle!

My 7 year old hasn't put any weight on for 18 months, the gastro doctor said as long as she's growing in height they weren't too worried (she does have medical issues though).
