I have a one year old who has been unwell for about 7 days now, cough, wheezing, off her food, runny nose, clingy and a high temperature of 39. Iv been to the doctors twice now and both time they have said it’s bronchiolitis but she didn’t need to go to hospital as her oxygen levels are ok. I guess my question is what should I do now? as her temperature has been up in 39s for 7 days and she doesn’t look like she’s getting any better she’s also just starting having loose poos after I managed to get her to eat I’m not happy with the doctor assessment and feel like she’s need something to help her fight whatever this is. Should I ring 111? Or am I being silly and should I just wait it out?

Loren92 · 08/11/2025 02:05

No she’s not on antibiotics just Calpol but even that’s not really doing anything

I had a very poorly 3 week old with bronchiolitis , we spent a week going back and forth into hospital as he got worse and worse , we were finally admitted after a week due to him not feeding for 20 hours and he starting sucking in when breathing .
Whats your little ones breathing like ? Its worth looking up what sucking in actually looks like so you know what to look out for and don’t hesitate to phone 111/ visit a & e .

@Loren92 Sorry your little one is poorly. We were in and out of hospital with our now 2 year old throughout winter last year due to multiple episodes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia. As PP said, definitely keep an eye on the breathing and if you see any signs of respiratory distress, such as pulling in under the ribs or sucking in at the throat then go straight to A&E as your little one may need some oxygen. Also when breathing got really bad for our little one they would give nebulisers. Also keep an eye on fluid intake because little ones can become dehydrated very quickly. Food isn’t as important. As temperature has been raised for a week a call to 111 wouldn’t do any harm and they will probably give you an out of hours appointment with a GP to check little one over. I would also recommend children’s ibuprofen. I have found this to be much more effective at bringing down fevers than Calpol. In hospital they have always alternated between the two. When my DD had a high temperature for that long it turned out to be the flu and she really was not happy but there was not much we could do other than try and keep the temp down. Not saying that is definitely what it is but it could be a possibility. Unfortunately if it is bronchiolitis it is usually caused by a virus so antibiotics won’t have any effect but like I said our little one has had bacterial pneumonia off the back of viruses several times and then obviously needed the antibiotics. Hope they get better soon!

I would make an appointment to see someone again. If the temp has been in 39s for 7 days that’s a long time and maybe there’s a secondary infection there too. As a pp has said, keep an eye out for sucking in at the throat or under the ribs as children tire easily and call 111 if you are concerned.

Also keep an eye on how much she’s drinking and and how wet her nappies are.

ring 111 if you have concerns over the weekend
