4 yo Leukaemia symptoms, i'm spiralling

Lockdownbaby2021 · 05/11/2025 20:14

My 4 year old has been unwell since last Friday. He went downhill on saturday, very pale, temperature, headache, stomach ache, tired. Perked up sunday but Monday woke up with another temp and stayed on sofa. Took him to the doctors and she said she couldn't find anything (other than temp of 39.7) and it was a mystery as he's showing no signs of a virus e.g sore ears, throat, snotty etc and told me just to observe him.

Yesterday he went to school as he seemed fine in the morning. but he got home and took himself off to bed fully clothed at 5:30pm (never ever done this!)

Today again he seemed okay this morning but he's come home from school and complained of tummy ache and suddenly got a temp and fallen asleep. He's also been a funny yellow colour recently.

I've been googling tonight and the horrible C word has come up. Now i'm spiralling. The last couple of months he's been starving but eating loads but has got quite skinny, he's also been complaining of leg pain which passed eventually so I put it down to growing.

My partner thinks i'm being crazy for thinking it. But now it's all I can think about. I feel like it's all adding up. I wanted to take him to the hospital tonight as he was screaming with his stomach and was saying he just wanted to go to bed (no sickness or diorrhea). But my partner saying let him sleep. I am in tears. Can someone reassure me, I'm not going to sleep tonight

Get a GP appointment tomorrow and go from there. Yellow colour can be an indication of liver problems.

Mullaghanish · 05/11/2025 20:23

Does he have a fever now? Can you check? Just react to that, for now. If it’s over 37 under his armpit him calpol and a drink. plenty fluids and if he’s vomiting and you can’t keep fluids into him or his pee is a strong tea colour, take him to hospital for an IV drip of fluids. He needs up to 5 -7 cups of water or flat 7up.. no fluids not peeing= A&E

Mullaghanish · 05/11/2025 20:24

If he wakes up again screaming with stomach pain, it could be appendix, take him to hospital

APatternGrammar · 05/11/2025 20:25

If he’s really yellow call 111. Perhaps you have photos of him from today or yesterday versus a couple of weeks ago that you can compare and perhaps ask a friend to look at?
There are plenty of leukaemia symptoms that are also symptoms of other things

NearlyDec · 05/11/2025 20:25

Good advice above.

With a yellow looking child who is losing weight while eating more food you need an emergency GP appointment tomorrow.

Is he asleep now? Is he still in lots of pain with his stomach. With a child screaming in pain I would be going to A and E.

.

Overthebow · 05/11/2025 20:27

He’s yellow and losing weight? Please get him checked out asap.

FurForksSake · 05/11/2025 20:29

If he is screaming in pain and has a high temp go to a&e. I would go back with the concerns you’ve shared, just to get them to reassure you and rule things out. But if your child is presenting as very poorly, high temp and pain that’s an emergency.

Cadenza12 · 05/11/2025 20:29

If he's in that much pain you need to get him urgent medical attention.

whatdidyousee · 05/11/2025 20:31

It’s a big jump to lukemia from the symptoms you’re written. I know ill children can cause anxiety but there are so many things I’d think of before lukemia. . I’d be thinking urine infection int his case. My son had growing leg pains at this age he would cry with them and he screamed with stomach ache from mesenteric adenitis which he was sent to hospital for as the gp was concerned about his appendix. Hope he’s ok and you both get some rest. I’d do as pp has said take him in if he’s screaming or gp tomorrow if he’s settled tonight.

PixieandMe · 05/11/2025 20:32

I’d take him to A&E tonight for your own peace of mind, you are going to be awake worrying, anyway. You need to really if he’s been in so much pain that he was screaming (bless him).

There are always plenty of other things that could be going on before you get to cancer.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 05/11/2025 20:34

He was crying out in pain when I was carrying him upstairs to bed. He's asleep now. He was as soon as his head touched the pillow.
I'm just pacing around though, crying checking on him every 5 minutes

I agree I took my 4yo to A&e with suspected meningitis they were lovely. Take a bag with PJ s snacks and drinks. Hopefully all is well

sellthebigissue · 05/11/2025 20:36

I would also take him to A&E this evening. Its always better to be safe than sorry.

Are you able to palpate his tummy and feel if its soft or firm in any places?

thismummyslife · 05/11/2025 20:40

Take him to A&E, it may seem really daunting to get him up and make the steps to go but it’s honestly what it’s there for, you’ll get answers and he will be in the right place rather than worrying all night. If they don’t find anything and he is happier and not in pain tomorrow you’ll have lost nothing except an awful night of worrying, keep us posted on him poor little fellow x

CaviarForTea · 05/11/2025 20:40

The yellow colour is what jumps out to me.

Are the white of his eyes yellow? That's jaundice and definitely needs reviewing. However, you'd expect the doc to have noticed

Kitte321 · 05/11/2025 20:41

Just wanted to give you a handhold. It’s so awful when they are ill, and natural to be anxious. I’llm the same - you feel sick with worry!
My advice would be to let him sleep for now. Make a bed up next to him so you can satisfy yourself that you can react quickly to any change in his condition. Maybe even set an alarm every 4 hours to check on his temp/condition. I’m sure the latter isn’t necessary but may help you to feel calmer/proactive.
The get yourself to the GP pronto in the am. Don’t be fobbed off.

Greenfingers37 · 05/11/2025 20:42

Sending love and wishing him well, poor little dude.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 05/11/2025 20:45

This is what i'd worry about though. He's been like this the last few nights, worrying me sick. then in the morning he will just jump out of bed and be his silly crazy self (so I send him to school and think he's better) then he comes home and he's like this again and goes downhill so fast so I'm just so confused. I wouldn't want to wake him now and then him spring into life saying he's better and then I look like a crazy mum. But right now he's concerning me and now that I've googled the L word I feel like more things are piecing together and now I feel sick

Has anyone taken bloods? If not I would take him to ED, explain your worries and ask for bloods (full blood count).

Kirbert2 · 05/11/2025 20:49

I'd definitely take him to be seen either in the morning or if he wakes up in pain during the night. I'd explain your concerns and ask for a blood test.

stepmumdramas · 05/11/2025 20:51

Children can spike temps without showing signs of a virus. My son has done this a few times.
The yellowing of the skin and losing weight is be concerned about though.
If he’s crying in pain again I’d take him to be checked. Kids can go up and down so quickly.

Starwomanwaiting · 05/11/2025 20:53

Could be a virus if it’s coming on at night. Don’t panic. Do you have anxiety at all? Saying that, if he’s yellow and screaming I’d be straight up to A&E. No harm in going, even though it could well turn out to be a virus.

IcingOnTheTop · 05/11/2025 20:53

I agree with a&e to be honest. You might be in for a long night but it gets the ball rolling
