‘Slight discolouration’ in my daughters eye.

Any eye people around that can give me enough reassurance to eat and sleep. I’m really struggling with anxiety.

A few weeks ago my daughter told me she had lost a patch of sight from the corner of one eye. She said it was getting bigger, and then it moved and happened in the other eye but not as bad. I rang the GP who wanted me to take her to A&E but unfortunately I don’t drive so it’s not an easy task. I phones 111 and then ambulance people wouldn’t come, they said I needed to take her to the GP who still flatly refused to see her.
within 25 mins all her vision was back and fine and she had a headache.
classic migraine & I used to have them as a teen so I wasn’t overly worried.

I made a GP appt on Monday, and they confirmed migraine with aura. And to make a symptom diary.
I made an appt with the optician too, to be sure and we went along on the Wednesday.
i knew she would need a new prescription as they prescribed her glasses to wear and she never does, and they took her into the room and low and behold she needs glasses full time now.

but after telling me that, she casually and I mean so casually said she had found a ‘slight patch of discolouration’ on the back of her eye.
I asks if this could have caused the sight loss & she said no, It wasn’t connected at all. And her optic nerve etc was fine and healthy. No swelling.

I asked about this spot, patch, and she said it could be a birth mark, just a variation in colour, a freckle, it could be many things but she would refer her to the hospital to see an opthermologist. She sent the referral and I rang the hospital to book an appt and she was triaged based on the referral and what ever photos the optician took and they told me they send a penthouse the post. I asked the general time frame and he said between 4-6 weeks.

I didn’t worry until i decided to google and saw ocular melanoma. and now im down a rabbit hole with it all. I am so so worried.

In keep googling, and obsessing.
it wasn’t mentioned in the exam room. If I’d not googled I wouldn’t have any idea.
its been nearly a week now since the appt, she is fine. And not worried at all. I have the report from the optician which I’ll attach.

is there any one around me that can offer some sort of reassurance with this?

please.

Why didn't you get a taxi to a&e?

nearest hospital is miles away and honestly it didn’t occur to me. I wouldn’t have had the £45 to pay for it and I had 2 little children with me too, I don’t unfortunately have anyone to call on to help with either a lift or childcare.

I have how ever got £50 saved now incase it happens again to get her home from college if she’s there. I used to have the exact same thing at her age. Until I was 17. Iv never had another one. I should have taken her. But she also really didn’t want to go. And was fine after she sat in a dark room with some paracetamol.

Optometrist here - it's incredibly unlikely to be a melanoma.
Lots of people have "freckles" at the back of the eye, we just usually photgraph them and then watch to see if they change over time.
It won't have anything to do with the visual loss - which sounds completely like a migraine, it definitely didn't warrant a visit to A&E.

One thing that I would think about, if her prescription changes again are myopia control glasses. They are successful in reducing the progression of myopia in most individuals and can prevent any of the issues people with severe myopia experience.

The first episode sounds like occular migraine. It's terrifying when you get it the first time and I understand why you wantd to go to A&E for it.

Make sure she drinks enough water and that she wears sunglasses. And regular check ups.

OP did your daughter get her appointment?

The optician found a freckle on the back of my eye about 7 years ago. I have check up's annually or 6 monthly I cant remember which where they check for changes.
