Antibiotics reassurance

Our nearly 2 year old has been poorly with cough cold symptoms since we returned from holiday at the end of August. Over the last couple of days, her cough seemed to be worsening. She developed a strange noise on the intake breath and was increasingly vomiting from coughing. It kept her up through the night and she was growing more distressed. Other than this, she’s otherwise fine. No temperature.

We took her to be seen this morning given how long she’s been under the weather. The doctor advised her chest is clear and nothing of concern, yet prescribed a course of antibiotics and an inhaler.

She’s not quite two yet but since birth, she’s been on a hell of a lot of antibiotics for sepsis, ear infections, tonsillitis etc so I’m a bit nervous giving her something when the doctor believes it’s viral.

If this was your daughter, would you give them anyway given a professional has prescribed them or would you hold on to them and see how she fairs?

I would be inclined to always give medicine the doctor has prescribed for my child but I would call and ask what the antibiotics were given for.

It doesnt seem like the doctor has given them for any particular reason? I would want to be clear what they have been prescribed for before giving.

I’m confused. If you’re not going to give her the antibiotics why did you take her to the drs?

@PutAPinInIt We took her as she’s had something since the end of August and over the last couple of days, her cough has worsened.

We didn’t go seeking antibiotics but rather, to check her over. Doctor confirmed viral and they had no concerns yet we left with antibiotics and inhaler anyway. I’m just a bit confused!

You could always see how she is over the next day or two but if she’s had something for a while it’s probably been advised to take them to see if she improves and if she doesn’t you can go back.
