Chicken pox?

Hello!
My 21 month old toddler started with what looked like a teething rash ( chin and cheeks) on Sunday morning. It quickly went but all day he was miserable and lacked any appetite.
By Sunday evening the rash was back and he had some on his arms too.
By Monday morning his arms and legs were covered as well as his chin and cheeks. We went to the GP who said it was an inflamed viral rash and we were sent away with steroid cream. This hasn't made much of difference and the more I look, the more I think it might
be chicken pox.

I think a clearer photo is needed, but do any of them look like blisters or filled with liquid? Certainly looks like it could be.

Looks like it to me but hard to say 100%. Regardless of whether it's viral or chickenpox, calamine lotion should help the rash if it's bothering him and he's itching. Treat the viral symptoms as required.

However, a pharmacist might be able to give you a second opinion.

Thank you for the replies! Sorry, here are some clearer photos from this morning.
The rash on the body hasn't changed at all since it first appeared on Monday; that's what makes me think it's more than just 'viral'

They dont look fluid filled to me at all. It looks more like a hand, foot and mouth rash (which can be all over the body!) to me. Go back to the GP if they are getting worse and see what they say.

PracticalPixie · 30/10/2025 08:20

I think they'd have gone blistery by now, so probably not chickenpox. If getting worse though, go back to GP or pharmacist maybe. A pharmacist diagnosed my dc's chickenpox really quickly and she was right!

dementedpixie · 30/10/2025 08:24

Are there any spots on his body or just arms and legs?
Could be hand foot and mouth rather than chickenpox. They dont look the fluid filled blisters which is what chickenpox spots look like

OPRM1919 · 30/10/2025 08:41

Thank you, everyone! They're all over his arms, legs, nappy area, chin and one cheek. The ones on his face have scabbed over. Will try and get seen again today

Yes agree looking at those newer pics looks less like CP. Also I think CP you would expect to be a lot on the torso which you haven’t mentioned? Hope he’s better soon.

FuzzyWolf · 30/10/2025 09:13

I think HFM. I don’t think it really matters as HFM, another virus or CP (confident it’s not) can all be treated at home.

OtterMummy2024 · 30/10/2025 09:46

Hand foot and mouth is definitely going round at present. Chickenpox is more common in the spring.

No. None on the torso at all. Thank you! He's okay in himself. At the weekend he was off all food and drink but that's okay now.

Thank you! I suppose the fact he doesn't really have anything on his hands or feet put me off HFM
