Child ate out of date lemon curd

I meant to throw it out ages ago.
His dad just gave him two spoons of the stuff, I don't think it even opened this year, possibly last year as I can't remember when it was opened it was that long ago!

I'm worried he will get botisim or other food poisoning. The jar says eat within 3 weeks.

What do I do? I want to cry! He's only 5 and has a few health issues!

So I checked when I bought it and it was March this year that's how long it's been opened for.

I am really panicking!

Honestly, please calm down. Those dates are a load of rubbish, they're just there to make you buy more. Lemon curd is pure sugar, you could eat it in 10 years and be fine. It's not like it was raw chicken! I don't think I've ever checked a date on a jar, or fresh stuff really. Obviously if he actually gets sick, get medical help, but highly doubt he will.

Unless it had a layer of mould on it I would not give this a second thought !!
I can’t believe he’s eaten two spoons of mould infected curd !!!
distract yourself - no stressing required !

dementedpixie · 29/10/2025 13:47

Is it a best before date?
If it is then it will fall in quality but wont necessarily be dangerous.
What is the best before date on the jar?

gamerchick · 29/10/2025 13:47

I go by the mould. If it looked right and wasn't mouldy then I really wouldn't give it another thought tbh.

Mushroo · 29/10/2025 13:48

He’ll either get sick or be absolutely fine - with the chance of being absolutely fine very high.

Dont worry, keep an eye on him.

Most likely worst case he has a runny tummy for a day.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2025 13:48

And if there's no mould on it and it tastes ok then I'd use it if its within the best before

IAmTheLogLady · 29/10/2025 13:55

It's absolutely fine, try to relax.

Lemonbaytree · 29/10/2025 13:59

I can't see the BBD as it's rubbed of but the 25 is left on there. To me It smells slightly off too. Theres also a watery bit inside too. Unsure if that's mould or what.
Husband tried it and said it tasted fine but I don't know.
Thanks for everyone who has replied.

lol they will be absolutely fine x

A quick google tells me that there have been 13 cases of botulism from food in the uk since 2010. That’s 0.001 cases per 100,000.

About 1100 children died in car crashes in the same period.

i imagine you take them in a car without a second thought. Do not worry about the lemon curd.

DiscoBob · 29/10/2025 14:20

Anything containing that much sugar won't go off. If it had mould on you just scrape it off. That's the reason they invented spreads and jams, long before they invented best before dates.

centaury · 29/10/2025 15:12

I had a look at Tesco lemon curd ingredients and the jar is more than half sugar. The next ingredients in terms of quantity are water, lemon juice and oils. If its gone a bit watery it's probably just the oils and water separating. I wouldn't worry, I'd be surprised if he had any consequences

Lemonbaytree · 29/10/2025 17:30

Thanks all, I feel a bit better now!

I do despair at today's generation (im only 45 btw) if we do ever get an apocalypse or long term lock down, there won't be a next generation.

FrostAtMidnight · 29/10/2025 17:37

I hate to think how old our lemon curd is and we're all still alive.

Mischance · 29/10/2025 17:55

The acid in the lemon juice coupled with the sugar will keep him safe.

BoringBarbie · 29/10/2025 18:19

I think the only thing to do now is leave him on a mountain side and back away slowly, singing Jerusalem.

In all seriousness though, this is not going to hurt him at all.

Botulism comes from honey and low-acid foods, which hardly applies to lemons.

Burntt · 29/10/2025 18:22

My mother kept lemon curd in the cupboard not the fridge and I was the o ly one who ate it very infrequently. Would be literally months in the cupboard open and I ate it. If you leave it long enough it does go mouldy eventually but honestly if he’s not sick don’t stress!!
