High temp and lots of shaking a&e or gp?

please could I have advice from anyone?
my just turned 3 year old has had a temp since Friday night 37.8 and above but at least 1/2 in 40’s each night.
he keeps shaking so much at night and in the morning last night at 4 it went on for about 15 minutes.
shall I go the gp or a&e? Sorry if it’s a silly question but I dont want to waste either setting’s time but I am worried.
he has not really been eating only bananas and some yoghurt, has been drinking lots of water. He is poorly in the morning but perks up then dips again before and after nap but plays a lot before bed so I thought it was passing. Just worried about the night time shaking and very highly during night.
now temp was 40.3

Did the GP do proper checks, like his throat I can’t express how many times I’ve been told it’s viral and it’s ended up being tonsillitis. It’s been 6 days of high fevers, I think further investigations need to be done. My daughter would perk up so times in the afternoon.

Omg @Phunkychicken 1 infected chicken pox spot! There is so much to look forward to with kids!

As all of you parents know he’s been catching all of these bugs since he started nursery in September. Ds goes mon -wed and by Wednesday he’s full of coughs and colds then he gets better over the weekend then it starts again. He’s actually had a temp nearly every week after the Wednesday but it goes after 24 hours which I was why I kind of left before seeking advice.

when does it end before their little immune systems cope with it!

update too- we went back to gp as they called me to check ds and basically said wait until Friday morning and bring him back if temp is still high overnight. One ear looked slightly inflamed inside but not so much they were concerned- just advised to keep an eye for tugging or redness.
happy with throat, chest, obs and everything else.

@cannynotsay we’ve been twice before when he was younger and told viral then a few days later needed antibiotics. It’s really hard for me to tell.
Especially when we visit the doctor and he’s happy prancing around!!

Thank you all so much. I worry about ds so much when he’s poorly but I also worry about being a neurotic mum over nothing!! Fingers crossed no more temps.

How is he today?

Nearly50omg · 30/10/2025 13:03

Sepsis symptoms are also the same so important you are seen today

Starlightsobright · 31/10/2025 10:19

hi @3luckystars he was fine, thank you for asking but again had a temp in the evening 38.5.

i actually came on to ask for more advice, dr said to call today if temp is continuing.
he had temp Thursday night 39.5 nothing through the night and last night 38.5 around 7pm
again before bed, nothing through the night.

Shall I go back or leave it, does it sound like it’s coming to the end? There only seems to be one temp in the evening. Cheeks have been red, could that be teething?

I just wanted to say thank you so much to absolutely everyone on this thread for your advice.

I took ds back to the gp who sent us on to hospital as it had now been 7days fever.
We managed to bypass a&e waiting area and straight on to the ward. We were there for 8 hours but still they covered everything including urine, bloods and xray that showed chest infection in left lung which none of the doctors could hear through the stethoscope so it really made all the difference.
Infection markers were raised.
Sent home with antibiotics.

There was definitely something underlying and am so relieved to have finally got to the bottom of it. It was so difficult to tell as he presented completely fine and happy during the day but only temp during the night. I knew something wasn’t quite right but it just wasn’t showing through the obs. Thank you all for the push for further investigation.

Ds is enjoying his very long lie-in ☺️
Have a lovely weekend everyone. Huge hugs X

@StarlightsobrightThat’s such wonderful news, and I’m so glad your GP was able to fast track you onto the paediatric ward as they did with us! Bless him, fingers crossed he’s feeling much better soon now that he’s on antibiotics xx
