5 yr old upset tummy

I’m really hoping someone might have some advice or reassurance because I’m at my wits’ end with worry.

My son has always been very regular with his poos — one big, normal poo a day, very predictable and consistent. He’s never had diarrhoea before.

On his first day back to school in September, he had an accident in school (sorry if this is TMI). It was diarrhoea, and it went unnoticed for a while. He had a couple more loose poos that day, but wasn’t unwell in any other way.

After that, things went back to normal for about a week, but around four weeks ago, the diarrhoea started again. It’s mostly small amounts in his pants during the day, though sometimes he has more typical poos in between.

At the moment, it seems to happen almost daily, especially after school. He can be fine at weekends (though there have been a couple of incidents), but during the school week, he often urgently needs to go straight after school, and it’s usually diarrhoea or very soft. This can happen a couple of times in the evening too.

We’ve been to the GP a couple of times — stool sample was fine, tummy felt fine, and nothing obvious has shown up. They suggested trying to cut out milk for a week or so, but he barely has any dairy anyway. I’m not convinced it’s an allergy as it came on so suddenly after starting back at school.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? I’m wondering if it could be stress-related, or maybe something like overflow constipation? He has months symptoms other then tummy/leg aches. ’m really hoping half term will show if it’s school-related, but at the moment it’s happening daily and I’m feeling so anxious about it.

I also suffer from emetophobia and I’m a single parent, so this has been really triggering for me. Any advice, experiences, or reassurance would be so appreciated. ❤️

How big are his “ big normal poos”? If they’re really big and solid then overflow diarrhoea from constipation would indeed be a possibility. Have a look at www.eric.org.uk

Could be a nerves.. I'm emetophobic too so feel your pain. I actually get an upset stomach from anxiety, hopefully will calm down over half term

Is he having milk at school?

A lot of 5 years old have a carton of milk and fruit for a snack in the morning, this could explain why it’s happening so much more during the week and since he’s been at school

If it’s been going on this long, I would request a blood test to rule out coeliac disease / other issues.

Thank you for the replies!

sorry this next bit may be TMI!

so when I saw he normally does big poos…. They’re massive 😅 and they always have been. He’s never had a problem with poos before and it’s all been very predictable.
since this started they amount that’s coming out must be significantly less! His episodes of diorehha aren’t big episodes and the poos his passing aren’t tiny or hard but not big and normal.

i started him in pre and probiotics on Sunday and it’s half term next week so I was going to see if things settle and then can put it down to school. But it’s just worrying me so much!

Does he have milk at school?

autumngirl714 · 22/10/2025 09:29

Sorry I ment to say that he doesn’t have milk at school.
he also doesn’t have milk at home and on the rare occasion he has cereal he has oat milk.
Wealso use vegan butter!

when he does have milk (ice cream etc) it hasn’t made things any different. I have been avoiding it though and no yogurts which he normally loves!
