Apologies for the 3rd thread by me on this topic. 12 year old in hospital after an operation on his mouth. He is finding swallowing really painful so he won't eat anything or take calpol. He can't really speak either. Nurses are saying he can't go home as he is not eating/drinking. He has a cannula in but they can't use it to give painkillers because he is supposed to be going home. This was supposed to be day surgery, then home first thing this morning.

Sorry you're going through this. Could Difflam spray help? Have they tried that?

Thank you. They haven't tried that. The nurses are trying to get hold of the drs to see if they will prescribe iv painkillers.

Ask them to give him a suppository painkiller?

ComfortFoodCafe · 21/10/2025 11:05

you can get throat numbing sprays, cant remember the name but maybe ask the nurses?

Another thing to try if not drinking (he will resist) that helped with my daughter is feeding water via a large 60ml syringe. Little bits at a time. Found it helpful to keep track of volume and also in terms of getting it down her throat.
