11yo has a migraine. Tips?

DS is 11, very nearly 12. He’s currently sleeping next to me as he’s had a migraine since yesterday afternoon. He went to bed when he got home from school, twice got up for food and has been sleeping since 8:30pm.

He’s had migraines in the past but this one is a stinker and I presume it’s hormone-related.

I’m wondering how we handle it/them. Presumably we just let him sleep for as long as he needs to today? Do we take him to the GP?

He said when he got into my bed an hour ago that’s he’s still feeling headachey.

Take to the GP, there’s plenty of medications to migraines but it may be trial and error to find the right one.

Hi Op, my DS (nearly 12) had the same thing a few weeks ago, and I myself have just had the same thing! I wonder if it is covid? My DS has headache as a main symptom of Covid (tested positive with no other symptoms). Do you have any tests to check if that is the case? Also, has he had his eyes checked recently?

Hickorydickorydock74 · 21/10/2025 09:09

Also, I would just ask the GP to check him over. My DS is coeliac and I think his recent spate of headaches / migraines coincided with being glutened and having Covid, possibly alongside hormones!

Thank you @Hickorydickorydock74 .

DS has regular eye tests as he has myopia prevention glasses.

I've suffered from migraines since I was four, they got worse at puberty and God bless the menopause because that eased them. Once you've done the medical checks the things I wish I hadn't had to work out the hard way were

  1. Don't get over tired.
  2. Keep a food diary to see if there are any triggers (citrus fruit for me and cruelly if a migraine was threatening I craved oranges)
  3. Keep hydrated
  4. Don't let blood sugar get too low.

Don't know if any of them will help him but they made things easier for me. Might be worth a try oh and don't let anyone say it's just a headache, I've come close to murder with that one.

I hope he's feeling better soon, he might be in need of a nice rest for half term.

Just thought with his age is he in his first term at senior school, might be stressful and tiring. Hopefully it will improve. Good luck.

GP. My ds had migraines and was given an MRI scan. Which didn't find anything, but they wanted to check. He then got two types of medication.

I can't imagine not going to the doctors with extreme headaches in a child (unless you've been before and know what's happening)

zazazaaar · 21/10/2025 11:26

Acupuncture was a completely game changer for me and is recommended by NICE (though not usually available through NHS).

MinnieMountain · 21/10/2025 12:17

I posted before our GP e-consult opened. I have contacted them since. He’s had migraines before but this was worse than usual.

How did you get on @MinnieMountain? Is your boy feeling better?

MinnieMountain · 22/10/2025 07:16

The GP rang and spoke to DS. She said to keep a headache diary for 6 weeks and asked him about possible triggers. He’s fine now thank you @Hickorydickorydock74 .

@MinnieMountain oh I am glad he’s feeling better. Hopefully it is just hormones / start of secondary school stress / over tiredness - I think (hoping) that is what it was in our case 💐
