Hair breakage - thyroid issues

HRR107 · 17/10/2025 09:53

My daughter is on the waiting list to be seen by an endocrinologist for thyroid issues. One of her side effects is having her hair break right at the scalp. It’s really effecting her confidence as it’s constantly frizzy. Is there anything anybody uses that they could recommended to help this?? I have attached a picture to see exactly what I mean.

Hi there, do is that new hair that’s growing? It does look like that. If it is maybe she could have deficiencies and lacking in something. A blood test would give answers maybe.

I agree, I think that's new hair, not broken hair. I have similar issues (and am hypothyroid, on thyroxine). It might be that the hair on top of her scalp has a very short growth stage (anagen?) and falls out before it can get to a decent length. How old is she?

She is 13. And the doctor suspects hypothyroidism from her blood tests. Does the thyroxine help with your symptoms? She has always had issues with her hair not growing. It’s never got past her shoulders and now it just seems to be getting worse for her 😩

Sadly for me thyroxine hasn't helped, but I have other issues with hormones and anaemia as well. For most people I think it does help or completely resolve the issue. I recommend a really good multivitamin that includes iron, zinc and selenium, as hypothyroidism can cause deficiencies and problems processing these minerals.

Also to add, the GP may say this is a common problem and simple to treat. But in fact it is a complex autoimmune disorder that you/she will need to understand in order to manage symptoms, regardless of thyroxine treatment. There is loads of info online.

@FigAboutTheRulesi totally missed these messages and thanks so much for your response. I will need to do my research and start her on a multivitamin. We attended paediatrics as she has been experiencing headaches and visual field issues (unrelated matter to her thyroid), however whilst there the doctor all but confirmed her blood results and that she has a thyroid issue but as of yet, we are still waiting to be seen by the endocrine team. Hopefully the wait won’t be too much longer!

Following as my 13 year old DD is in a very similar position.

She has been found to have high thyroid antibodies and she is borderline for TSH levels. She’s noticed her hair coming out and thinning at the temples.

She does also have low iron (not anaemic but low iron stores) so is now taking Feroglobin. She thinks it’s helped the hair but a bit early to tell. Anyway echoing PP that low iron and thyroid seem to be intertwined.

You can get specific thyroid support multivitamins, I used to take one as I’m also hypothyroid, I think it was this one. However most multivitamins, including this, don’t generally contain much in the way of iron, so if you have concerns about iron it’s worth a separate supplement.

We are also awaiting an endocrinologist appt. I will share any helpful advice on this thread!

By the way I also agree that the hair issue is more likely to be hair falling out and then new baby hairs growing, rather than breakage. That’s definitely the issue I have & I have underactive thyroid.
